Position Information
The purpose of this classification is to provide supervision for juveniles placed on pre-trial release by the Juvenile Court.
Job Summary
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Ensures compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, court orders, standards, policies and procedures; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.
Provides supervision for a caseload of juvenile offenders released on conditions of Juvenile Court orders; supervises cases of first-time status or unruly juveniles placed on court probation; conducts initial review of all juvenile complaints filed and determines whether complaints may be processed as informal adjustments or forwarded to Department of Juvenile Justice; supervises juveniles placed on informal adjustment; monitors status of pre-trial release cases throughout the court process.
Counsels/advises juveniles and their families regarding bond/release conditions, the judicial/court system, resolution of problems, achievement of goals of treatment plans, or other related issues.
Collects and investigates personal information regarding juveniles to determine residence, employment, and other data; conducts background checks for juvenile histories of prior offenses; schedules appointments for juveniles to report.
Conducts visual observations of juvenile detainees on bond or conditional release in home, school, or work environments; maintains frequency and type of client contact according to type of supervision.
Performs drug/alcohol testing of juveniles; collects urine/saliva samples for drug/alcohol testing; administers drug/alcohol testing and interprets test results.
Performs a variety of services to facilitate rehabilitation of youth offenders; implements or oversees implementation of treatment/program plan for youth placed on probation of informal adjustment by the court; identifies sources of supportive services which may be needed; refers juveniles to appropriate supportive services; monitors and follows up on referrals to other agencies.
Attends court sessions involving conditionally released juveniles; attends bond/detention hearings of detained juveniles to assist in determining qualification for release supervision; testifies at court hearings as needed.
Monitors adherence to conditions of probation, placement, or informal adjustment as set by court orders; develops alternative actions to avoid revocation of placement; initiates revocation procedures and makes request for detention as appropriate; provides for proper service of revocation notice and violation reports within established time limits; completes documentation to refer youth for interstate placement as needed.
Makes referrals of juveniles to be monitored to electronic monitoring companies.
Serves as liaison between Juvenile Court and electronic monitoring companies; serves as liaison between Juvenile Court and the school system.
Provides support and technical expertise within assigned department; performs the functions of Second Intake Officer in absence of Court Administrator or Judge; consults with other staff members regarding case management issues; assists with implementation of grants and programs as directed.
Manages case files; establishes and updates case files; documents youth offender activities, contacts, and case management services; prepares court documentation and case records; enters case information into computerized case management system; researches and updates records as needed.
Provides information and assistance to the public regarding court/department services, court cases, procedures, documentation, or other issues; responds to questions or complaints; initiates problem resolution.
Compiles statistical data pertaining to caseloads, defendants, and related issues; performs research; makes applicable calculations; analyzes data and identifies trends; prepares and distributes reports.
Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, case records, pre-trial release reports, indigent defense reports, recommendations, or other documents.
Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, court calendars, court orders, release/bond conditions, psychological evaluations, individual assessments, laboratory reports, diagnostic reports, laws, statutes, ordinances, policies, procedures, guidelines, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
Operates a computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data; verifies accuracy of entered data and makes corrections; utilizes word processing, spreadsheet, database, case management, e-mail, Internet, or other computer programs.
Conducts research of laws, regulations, computer records, Internet sites, hardcopy materials, or other sources as needed.
Maintains file system of reports, documentation, and records.
Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, Judges, court personnel, attorneys, law enforcement personnel, defendants, family members, electronic monitoring companies, the public, outside agencies, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
Attends various meetings, serves on committees, and represents the Court in public forums as needed;
serves on Community Affairs Committee to maintain positive rapport between schools, court, and the community;
Maintains confidentiality of departmental documentation/information.
Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable laws/guidelines; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Performs general/clerical tasks, which may include typing documents, making copies, sending/receiving faxes, filing documentation, or processing incoming/outgoing mail.
Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Associate’s degree with course work emphasis in Criminal Justice; supplemented by one (1) year previous experience and/or training involving juvenile probation, juvenile offender case management, court procedures, and personal computer operations; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain valid Drug/Alcohol Testing certification. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.
