Position Information

The purpose of this classification is to assist in supervising and coordinating activities involving maintenance and repair of the County’s fleet of automotive and mechanical equipment at multiple repair and service locations throughout the County.

Job Summary

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Provides direction, training, guidance, and assistance to employees; coordinates daily work activities; organizes, prioritizes, and assigns work; monitors status of work, inspects completed work, and troubleshoots problem situations; responds to employee problems/concerns.

Assists in scheduling and coordinating work activities; completes service/work orders; coordinates and monitors work performed by outside service providers.

May be required to communicate across departments about project status, challenges, resources, and team members, along with updates to stakeholders and users regarding the condition and availability of vehicles and equipment.

May be requested to perform; summary reports of unit activities to report data such as volume/type of repairs, mileage, parts, and costs; prepares/submits payroll documents for payment; researches and recommends new equipment/tools for potential purchase; assists in monitoring expenditures.

Performs duties of manager in absence of same, as directed by Department Head.

Performs major repairs, overhauls, and general mechanical repair work and preventative maintenance on vehicles, light/heavy equipment, fire/emergency vehicles (if applicable), marine equipment, small engines, or other automotive/mechanical equipment.

Inspects, tests, and diagnoses problems involving various systems of vehicles or equipment, such as gasoline/diesel engines, ignition systems, computerized engine controls, electronic fuel injection systems, transmissions, differentials, steering systems, electrical systems, suspension systems, hydraulic systems, brake systems, drive train systems, engine cooling systems, fuel systems, charging systems, starting systems, exhaust systems, emission systems, inflatable restraint systems, heating/air conditioning systems, windows, lighting systems, or horns.

Examines vehicles to determine necessary repair or maintenance work; conducts diagnostic computer testing; consults with drivers or equipment operators to obtain input on problems, assist in diagnosing problems, or prevent future problems; assesses body damage to vehicles; determines parts/supplies necessary to conduct repairs.

Performs appropriate repair, removal, replacement, rebuilding, or maintenance work on vehicle/equipment systems and components; removes or replaces brakes, brake pads, wheels, steering components, shocks, transmissions, vehicle cylinder heads, differentials, suspension springs, starters, alternators, water pumps, thermostats, radiators, flywheels, fuel injectors, and other components; turns, replaces, or resurfaces rotors/drums; replaces rings, bearings, and universal joints; repairs/replaces clutches; rebuilds generators and carburetors; relines brakes; removes or replaces engines, engine parts, and engine gaskets; checks engine timing and performance; grinds valves; rebuilds wheel cylinders; replaces disk calipers; installs, removes, repairs or replaces doors, lifts, seats, radios, lights, windows, mirrors, or emergency sirens.

Performs general welding work; rebuilds equipment; repairs broken/cracked parts or fabricates new parts; cuts metal and welds metal components. Assists in diagnosing and cost estimating on accident/incident damage to vehicles.

Performs routine and preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment; pumps fuel into vehicles; checks fluid levels and replaces fluids as needed; drains/replaces oil; changes/replaces filters and batteries; removes/replaces belts, hoses, fuses, bulbs, blades, skids, and other parts; flushes radiators and coolant systems; replaces spark plugs and wires; lubricates mechanical parts and greases equipment; services air conditioning systems; checks air pressure level of tires; patches holes/punctures in tires; repairs/replaces damaged tires; rotates and balances tires.

Tests vehicles, machinery, equipment, and parts for proper operations; conducts road tests of vehicles undergoing repair.

Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with repairing, maintaining, and testing vehicles and equipment, which may include a service truck, fuel truck, motor grader, tandem dump truck, rubber tire loader, fire apparatus, boat, jet ski, outboard motor, small engine, tractor mower, bush hog, side arm, chain saw, extraction tools, (if applicable), forklift, auto crane, vehicle lift, hydraulic jack, tire machine, battery charger, air conditioning charger, brake lathe, welder, cutting torch, drill press, air compressor, generator, pressure washer, gauges, meters, diagnostic instruments, or mechanic tools.

Transports, loads, and unloads various equipment, parts, and materials used in projects.

Makes emergency service calls for disabled vehicles/equipment at work sites or on the road.

Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep tools/equipment in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, calibrating tools, washing/cleaning vehicles and equipment, or cleaning shop/work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.

Maintains inventory of department equipment, parts, tires, tools, and supplies; ensures availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities; initiates requests for new/replacement materials; researches sources, availability, and prices of parts; picks up/delivers materials as needed; conducts periodic inventory counts.

Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; reports accidents and incidents.

Maintains vehicle/equipment service records, warranty records, or other documentation of work activities.

Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, payroll sheets, work orders, maintenance records, mileage records, timesheets, or other documents.

Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, time sheets, checklists, work requests, maintenance records, oil sample graphs, parts manuals, service manuals, diagrams, schematics, specifications, technical bulletins, reference materials, manuals, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.

Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, vendor/suppliers, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

Maintains an awareness of new practices, procedures, trends, and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications

Vocational/Technical degree from an accredited college or university with training emphasis in mechanics and automotive/mechanical maintenance; supplemented by four (4) years of progressively responsible experience and/or training that includes mechanics, automotive/mechanical maintenance, welding/body work, heavy equipment operation, and vehicle operation; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job including automotive shop leadership and management experience.. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver’s License. Must possess and maintain valid Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Technician Certification from National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. Prefer valid Mobile Air Conditioning Society (MACS) Air Conditioning Refrigerant Recovery Certification. Operation of heavy equipment requires possession and maintenance of a valid Georgia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s).
