The purpose of this classification is to provide community outreach and education to promote the animal shelter and pet adoption services; coordinate volunteers that assist at the shelter, and coordinate the animal foster care program. This position also provides support to the front desk and customer service functions and may oversee the shelter in the Manager’s absence.
Job Summary
Coordinates the shelter’s volunteer program, recruits, trains and maintains the schedule of all volunteers and student community service volunteers; facilitates monthly volunteer meetings; maintains database and records of volunteers and organizations who provide assistance to the shelter.
Coordinates community outreach and education for the shelter: serves as a liaison between the shelter and the news media, business/professional/civic groups, the general public and other individuals in an effort to distribute information concerning shelter activities and programs; organizes special events and community outreach programs; recommends strategies and outlets for promoting programs and services; performs and/or participates in marketing, publicity, and community outreach activities.
Coordinates the shelter’s animal transfer program. Develops and maintains transfer networks partnerships; identifies animals in need of rescue; schedules transfers and transport, prepares necessary documents for transfer.
Coordinates the shelter’s animal foster care program: promotes animal foster care; recruits and screens volunteers to serve as foster homes; provides approval/denial of applicants to serve as a foster home; assigns animals to foster families; monitors and tracks animals placed in foster care to ensure that they receive proper care and treatment; and maintains all related paperwork and documentation.
Provides customer assistance related to the adoption of animals: assists with animal adoptions; supervises introduction of potential adoptions, enters animal records into the assigned computer system, takes pictures for animal records and updates the computer system as necessary; prepares and/or processes a variety of documentation such as microchip forms and animal cage cards.
Provides customer service and assists with lobby operations to include owner surrenders and animal intake: answers telephone calls, greets visitors, and assists individuals at front counter; ascertains nature of business, directs callers/visitors to appropriate personnel, and records/relays messages; provides information/assistance regarding services, activities, procedures, documentation, fees, or other issues; retrieves, distributes, or processes various documentation, forms or records as requested; responds to routine questions/complaints and initiates problem resolution. Performs general/clerical tasks, which may include typing documents, making copies, sending/receiving faxes, filing documentation, or processing incoming/outgoing mail.
Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems; responds to requests for service or assistance.
Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable laws/regulations; maintains an awareness of new trends in animal sheltering medicine and advances in the veterinary profession; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.
Operates a personal computer and other general office equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software.
Additional Functions
This classification is designed as a safety sensitive position which is subject to random drug and alcohol testing and any other drug testing methods as stated in policies adopted by Forsyth County concerning drug and alcohol.
Assists in the cleaning and disinfection of the adoption cat areas as needed.
Provides assistance to other employees or departments as needed; performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by one (1) year previous experience and/or training involving public relations, community outreach and education, program coordination, working with animals in a veterinary hospital, animal shelter, kennel or similar environment or a related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Experience in an animal welfare organization preferred. Required to possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license.

Disability Insurance – Short Term and Long Term
100% paid by Forsyth County. Eligibility begins date of hire.
Short Term Disability – 60% of weekly earnings to a maximum of $1,000.00 a week. Eligibility begins 14 days after an accident or sickness and has a benefit period of 24 weeks.
Long Term Disability – 60% of monthly earnings to a maximum of $5,000.00 a month. Eligibility begins at 26 weeks to coordinate with the end of Short Term benefits and continues 24 months (Own Occupation).
