What are the responsibilities and job description for the Animal Services Director position at Forsyth County (NC)?
Forsyth County Animal Control Department is seeking an experienced and detail oriented Animal Services Director. The Animal Services Director is responsible for planning and directing the County's animal shelter and coordinating with the Sheriff's Office Animal Services Enforcement Division. Work is performed in accordance with state and local ordinances governing protection of people and the treatment, impounding, sale and disposal of animals. Work may occasionally involve an element of personal danger from animal bites, diseased animals, or exposure to toxic chemicals. Work is performed under general supervision and is evaluated for effectiveness by outcome analysis and review of community relations.
This is a public safety position and is subject to working nights, weekends and holidays. The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Considerable knowledge of state and local laws regulating control, inoculation, sale, care, and
disposal of animals, and rabies control.
- Knowledge of humane practices for euthanasia of animals.
- Ability to organize and supervise subordinates and prepare budget estimates and various reports.
- Ability to understand and implement state and local laws, rules and regulations.
- Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with public officials, outside agencies, the public, and
employees.
- Knowledge of nutritional requirements of animals and diseases of animals.
- Ability to lift up to 20 lbs. occasionally 10 lbs freq or negligible amounts constantly,
requires walking or standing to a significant degree.- Graduation from a four-year college with a relevant degree and three years of progressively
responsible animal control program management or animal shelter experience and demonstrated customer service and public relations skills.
- Must have a valid N.C. driver's license.
- A four-year degree outside of relevant academic fields plus additional years of relevant experience may also be considered.
- Additional experience may substitute for some or all of the degree requirement.- Directs personnel engaged in the enforcement of state and local laws regarding protection of
people, rabies control and animal confinement and treatment.
- Responds to and resolves questions or complaints from the general public and public officials;
appears at public meetings, in court as necessary, or in administrative hearings to give testimony and explain
policies, or to give information.
- Supervises the feeding, care and handling of animals at the shelter; and maintains shelter
facilities, grounds, vehicles and equipment.
- Performs related work as required.
- Schedules, monitors and participates in the euthanasia of animals.
- Prepares and manages the annual department budget.
- Oversees a medical program which includes a basic medical exam and administration of certain medications to adoptive animals.
- Oversees a system for the procurement and use of controlled substances for euthanasia and other purposes.
- Coordinates care and custody efforts with the Sheriff's Office, Public Health, and other relevant agencies involved in the prevention of rabies.
- Maintaining a NC driver's license in good standing, without lapse or loss of the privilege to drive in compliance with North Carolina law, and in compliance with applicable DOT standards for commercial motor vehicle drivers if required to perform the duties assigned to the position.
