What are the responsibilities and job description for the Public Health Educator position at Forsyth County (NC)?
Forsyth County Department of Public Health has an opening for a Public Health Educator. The Public Health Educator works with POSSE (Prevent Ongoing Spread of STIs Everywhere), the HIV/STI outreach section of the department.
Duties include transporting specimens, data/medical record entry, condom distribution, inventory control, provide Spanish/English interpretation and translation resources, backup support for jail testing, telephone results to clients and provide HIV/STI education, counseling, and testing to the community in conjunction with other POSSE programs.
The successful candidate must have and be able to accurately complete documentation, oral and written communication skills, excellent computer skills, and enjoy interacting with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Must be able to complete phlebotomy skills training and strong HIV counseling, testing, and referral certification. A driver’s license is required for travel to community sites and outreach. Must be able to drive the POSSE mobile unit.
This position may require working some evenings and weekends.A successful candidate should have the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
Ability to write and speak effectively in presenting ideas.
Ability to understand the social and psychological factors affecting target group's receptivity to service utilization.
Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with departmental personnel, community organizations and the general public.
General knowledge of the functions of community health agencies.
General knowledge of the methods and techniques used in preparing and disseminating educational information to the public.
General knowledge of the techniques used in preparing and displaying posters, exhibits and other educational visual aids.
Some knowledge of the theoretical principles and practices of public health and public health education.Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in health education.
A four-year degree outside of the relevant academic field plus additional years of relevant experience may also be considered.
A higher education level may be considered as a substitution for all or part of the experience .
Valid driver's license required.Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Implements activities within established guidelines based on interpretation of needs assessment;
Selects educational materials & methods and implements a planned health education program;
Teaches health education classes for clients in community groups;
Designs health education programs of limited complexity and targeted to specific groups;
Educates & supports males and females with reproductive life planning;
Participates in Community Advisory Boards;
Provides technical assistance in the rearing of children and;
Assists in the collection of community data, generally from existing resources, for planning public health education programs.

Salary : $45,115 - $76,669
