TThe Part-Time Instructor, High School Equivalency in Spanish/ESL reports to the Coordinator, Director and the Dean of College and Career Readiness. The instructor is responsible for providing instruction in Spanish and English to adult learners of varying academic levels. The instructor helps students meet necessary goals and prepares students for secondary coursework. This instructor will be responsible for assisting adult learners with acquiring the academic and workforce development skills necessary to achieve a high school equivalency diploma and to transition to post-secondary opportunities.

The hours for this position are Daytime 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and/or Evening 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Education and/or Experience:
  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English.
  • Successful teaching experience in ESL, Literacy, Basic Skills, Adult High School, WIOA Funded
  • Programs, K-12, or closely related organizations.
  • Willingness to work primarily from an offsite center or campus.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the unique mission and vision of Forsyth Tech.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred
  • Master’s degree in one of the following areas: Teaching, Adult Education, ESL, Curriculum & Instruction, Community College Administration, or related field.
  • Working knowledge of ADVANSYS, Colleague or any other ERP software management system.
  • Experience with Online Adult Learning modalities.
  • Experience in using data to make programmatic improvements.
Essential Duties
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
To include the following. Other duties may be assigned:
  • Must be bilingual in Spanish and English.
  • Develop lesson plans and course materials that maximize student learning in subject matter areas: English as a Second Language, Language Arts (Reading and Writing), Social Studies, Science and Mathematics.
  • Evaluate student progress regularly, with an emphasis on building reading and math skills to a level of high school proficiency on TABE, CASAS, or other, approved standardized assessments.
  • Develop and deliver engaging lesson plans aligned to the NCCCS College and Career Readiness Adult Education Content Standards.
  • Employ appropriate and diverse teaching and learning strategies – i.e. individual, group, hands-on and contextualized instruction as well as lecture and discussion. Incorporate instructional technology when available and appropriate.
  • Assist in providing academic guidance to students as needed to achieve academic and career goals.
  • Review course content and materials, student evaluations, and make recommendations to Coordinator for course revision and/or development. Collaborate with Coordinator to review, evaluate and, if necessary, revise HSE in Spanish program.
  • Maintain accurate records of student daily hours through Advansys, pre and post-test hours, and progress. Submit final closeout documentation according to established deadlines.
  • Maintain a thorough working knowledge of educational functioning levels (EFL’s), LEIS forms, post-testing guidelines and performance measures. Monitor student registrations, goals, and outcomes using LEIS (Literacy Education Information System).
  • Complete and submit payroll hours each month.
  • Implement best practices for the retention and recruitment of students.
  • Adhere to institutional policies and procedures. Enforce rules concerning student behavior.
  • Assist with the enrollment of students to improve retention efforts.
  • Attend and actively participate in team meetings and twelve hours of professional development annually.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Instructional Coordinator, Dean, or Vice President.
  • Make recommendations to Coordinator for supplies, equipment, and equipment repairs.
  • Assume responsibility for being familiar with and adhering to all policies of the College.

  • Reads written communications and analyzes and interprets both verbal and written communications.
  • Responds coherently verbally and in writing to students, co-workers, and individuals contacting the College.
  • Responds to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • Presents information effectively to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
Mathematical Skills:
  • Performs basic mathematical operations in problem solving.
  • Applies mathematical concepts such as exponent and permutation to such tasks as test reliability, frequency distribution, sampling theory, and factor analysis.

Reasoning Ability:
  • Defines problems, collects data, establishes facts, and draws valid conclusions.
  • Interprets an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deals with several abstract and concrete variables.

  • Is frequently required to stand and walk.
Is able to hear audible equipment indicators and verbal communications in the environment.

  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
  • Sees with sufficient close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment to differentiate light/color intensity and evaluate perceivable changes in the environment.
  • Has a moderate sense of smell to determine danger indicators such as smoke.
