The Lead STEM Tutor is responsible for developing and implementing programming in the STEM Lab to enhance student success in STEM disciplines. This role will work closely with the Assistant Math Chair to design STEM Lab activities and the Coordinator of Supplemental Instruction (SI) and Tutoring to ensure adequate coverage and support for STEM students. The position also includes a tutoring component, requiring direct tutoring hours in STEM subjects. Additionally, this position will oversee study skills programming, create resources, and collaborate with academic departments to build a comprehensive resource repository, helping students achieve their academic goals in subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, and Statistics.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field, Education, or a related discipline.
- At least three years of experience in academic support, tutoring, or related educational services.
- Experience developing student-focused programming and supporting student success initiatives.
- Master’s degree in a STEM field, Education, or related area.
- Experience in program management within a higher education environment.
- Familiarity with Supplemental Instruction and collaborative learning strategies.
1. STEM Lab Program Development:
- Collaborate with the Assistant Math Chair to design and implement programming that supports STEM Lab initiatives.
- Develop specialized workshops and learning modules aimed at strengthening students’ foundational skills in STEM subjects.
- Coordinate with faculty to align lab activities with course objectives and reinforce learning through practical application.
2. Coordination and Scheduling:
- Work closely with the SI and Tutoring Coordinator to manage scheduling for STEM Lab coverage, ensuring the lab is adequately staffed with skilled tutors and SI leaders.
- Supervise and support tutors assigned to the STEM Lab, providing training, mentorship, and professional development opportunities.
3. Study Skills Programming and Resources:
- Develop and conduct workshops on study skills and academic strategies to promote student success across various disciplines.
- Create handouts, guides, and a video repository to equip students with resources on time management, note-taking, and effective study habits.
- Establish a resource repository that includes academic content for subjects like Physics, Chemistry, and Statistics, providing students with accessible course support materials.
4. Student Support and Engagement:
- Assist students in utilizing STEM Lab resources effectively and connect them with study skills resources tailored to their learning needs.
- Develop a welcoming and inclusive environment in the STEM Lab, encouraging collaborative learning and peer support.
- Facilitate study groups and provide a structure for group activities to enhance comprehension and application of course materials.
5. Collaboration with Academic Departments:
- Partner with faculty across STEM departments to identify areas where additional support resources can aid student learning.
- Maintain regular communication with academic departments to update the resource repository with current and relevant content.
- Advocate for the needs of STEM students and collaborate on initiatives that promote their retention and academic success.
6. Data Management and Program Assessment:
- Track and analyze student participation in STEM Lab and study skills programming, identifying trends and areas for improvement.
- Regularly assess the effectiveness of STEM programming and support resources, using data to refine offerings and enhance service delivery.
- Prepare reports on the impact of STEM Lab and study skills programming on student performance and retention.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong understanding of academic support strategies and familiarity with STEM disciplines.
- Proven experience in developing and implementing educational programming in STEM or academic support settings.
- Ability to coordinate complex schedules and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong organizational, communication, and data analysis skills.
- Proficiency in creating educational resources and using technology to support student learning.
