Job Overview
The Teacher AVID will plan and implement an instructional, AVID College Readiness System and provide related educational services for students in assigned grade levels. Manage student behavior, assess and evaluate student achievement, and modify instructional activities as required; carry out a variety of student monitoring and controls activities. Any teacher who will coach a UIL sport will also provide athletic services related to that athletic sport and the athletic program.
Position Description
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Commitment to, demonstrate support and advocate for the goals and mission of the AVID College Readiness System (ACRS)
- Assess student abilities as related to desired educational goals, objectives, and outcomes. Continually assess student achievement and maintain appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation for institutional and individual reporting purposes
- Ensure that the WICOR strategies are fully implemented during the AVID class, and assist other content teachers to implement WICOR strategies in their classes. Work with the AVID counselor to ensure that the AVID students are placed in rigorous courses appropriate to their interests, desire, and determination.
- Advocate for the AVID students with other teachers and the counselors as they seek access to rigorous courses
- Manage the behavior of learners in instructional setting to ensure environment is conducive to the learning process, and assists and participates in management of student behavior in other parts of the school, center, school grounds, or work site
- Coordinate instructional related and testing activities with other professional staff, both school and non-school-based, as required, to maximize learning opportunities
- Utilize a variety of instructional materials and available multi-media and computer technology to enhance learning
- Ensure that Site Team meetings are held and that a written agenda is provided- Sites should hold monthly meetings
- Participate in in-service and staff development activities and staff meetings as required or assigned to include AVID professional development activities
- Ensure continuous communication with parents, both written and oral, to keep them informed of student(s) progress
- Continually communicate with students on instructional expectations and keeps them informed of their progress in meeting those expectations
- Manage allotted learning time to maximize student achievement
- May assign work to and supervise instructional assistants, parent, and student volunteers
- Ensure classroom and / or instructional environment is attractive, healthful, safe, and conducive to learning and that materials are accessible to students and in good condition
- May, as itinerant, serve at two or more schools on a regular basis. May make off-school site visits to monitor students, confer with employers, or site instructors.
- Support or participate in school wide student activities and social events and approved fund raising activities
- As assigned or required, monitor student behavior in non-instructional areas and intervenes to control and modify disruptive behavior, reporting to appropriate administrator as appropriate
- From time-to-time, collaborate with other professionals (guidance counselors, librarians) to carry out school wide instructional or related activities.
- Assist in developing self-advocacy, self-expression, and character development within the students
- Assist students (high school level) with college preparation activities such as college and scholarship searches, college essay, registering for college entrance exams, financial aid, etc.
- Design and hold (with the Site Team) regular parent meetings which focus on AVID strategies and preparing the students for college preparation and readiness
- Work closely with the AVID tutors and ensure that high quality AVID tutorials are provided during the AVID elective class two times per week
- Work on continues training and retention of tutors for the campus
- Sponsor and support student leadership, activism, and community service
- Schedule field trips and guest speakers (with the Site Team) for the AVID class including trips to college and university campuses
- Lead the development of the school site team plan and certification with input and involvement from the building site team
- Complete required on-line data entry as designated by the AVID Center
- Lead the site team in completing the annual Site Certification Process
