ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Communicates basic instructions to patients in English and/or Navajo.
- Redirects patient enquires and concerns and maintains patient confidentiaity.
- Maintains phlebotomy skills and obtains venous and capillary blood samples based on age, sample requirements and difficulty of collection and must perform and guide others when directed.
- Determines the suitability of specimen in regards to correct patient information, sample requirements and performs correct preparation of specimen handling testing or storage for transporting to outside testing laboratories to include preparing cytology, surgical specimens.
- Communicates any discrepancies or questionable situations to the department supervisors and request new specimen if determined to be unsuitable.
- Ensures operation of analyzers in all department disciplines and other laboratory equipment, by following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques.
- Prepares reagent for QC, Calibrations, linarites, and dilutions using appropriate pipetting techniques.
- Preforms quality control procedures on equipment and maintains proper records for review and corrective action reports.
- Analyzes and interprets QC data in regards to WestGard Rules, documents and address unacceptable findings with the MT III and department Supervisor to determine course of action to follow.
- Understands instrumentation error codes and has the skills to address errors to maintain accurate test results.
- Be able to perform instrument calibration and interpret acceptance criteria.
- Performs Daily,Weekly,Monthly, and Annual maintenance on analyzers as scheduled and outlined in Maintenance Procedure Manual.
- Performs all non-routine and specialized tests using established protocols. (Example Manual Body Fluid and dilutions)
- Ensures daily department logs are completed, corrective action properly documented and perform a direct handoff to the next shift.
- Reviews patient reports for accuracy and correctness and understands appropriate clinical states in relations to test results, and reacts to indicators of malfunctions.
- Refers discrepancies to technical supervisor and report all errors/ discrepancies thru laboratory Quality Systems, immediately prior to releasing of patient results.
- Participates in the Laboratory CAP Proficiency Program and maintains required competent Level for compliance
- Participates in the Laboratory Quality Assurance Program by formally reporting Concerns or Errors as outlined in Laboratory Quality Assurance Policies and Procedures.
- Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations established by TMC Hospital and Laboratory.
- Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control and hazardous waste policies and protocols.
- Participates in Laboratory accreditation by maintaining laboratory documentation, knowledge and skill levels in relations to approved Laboratory procedures and policies as well as Hospital Policies.
- Maintains laboratory supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies.
- Conserves laboratory resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job tasks efficiently.
- Assists in developing technical procedures, forms and working job aide material.
- Assists in developing instruction guides and training materials.
- Assists with training demonstrations.
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
- Participates in mandatory in-services/training regarding Safety, OSHA, HIPAA and Infection Control, etc.
- Completes all required competency assessments and training within prescribed due dates.
- Participates as an active member of the laboratory staff to improve the overall operation and efficiency of Laboratory.
- Participates in group discussions and problem solving in laboratory improvement.
- Contributes to team effort to meet projected deadlines.
- Mentors MLT’s and MLA’s
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
MANDATORY MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: Two (2) years’ experience in performing high complexity testing in a medical laboratory.
Education: Associates Degree in Chemical, Biological or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution which includes-
- 6 Semester hours of Chemistry
- 6 Semester hours of Biology
- 12 Semester hours of Chemistry, biology, or Medical Laboratory technology in any combination.
*Must provide a copy of diploma and transcript upon hire to meet CLIA88 Standard (493.1489) qualification for High Complexity testing personnel
*Education institute must be approved or accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES), the Commission on Allied Health Education Accreditation (CAHEA), or other organization approved by HHS.
*Candidates must be eligible for the appropriate certification examination as a medical technologist or clinical lab scientist given by the American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Registry (ASCP-BOR), the National Credentialing Agency (NCA), American Association of Clinical Chemists (AACC) or American Medical Technologists (AMT), or the American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB).
