Fort Edward UFSD is currently seeking a candidate to fill a vacant Head Bus Driver position. This is a full-time, 12-month, civil service position (candidates may be required to take a civil service at a future date to later be determined).
Position Overview
The Head Bus Driver is a supervisory role responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the Fort Edward Union Free School District's transportation system. The incumbent oversees daily transportation operations, including scheduling, staffing, documentation, and bus maintenance. This position is both managerial and hands-on, requiring the individual to actively drive buses when needed and work collaboratively with the Transportation Coordinator, BOCES, and district leadership to ensure high-quality transportation services. This position reports directly to the School Business Official.
Key Responsibilities
Supervisory Duties
- Supervise, train, and evaluate transportation staff, including bus drivers, substitutes, and other transportation personnel.
- Develop and manage staff schedules, ensuring adequate coverage for daily routes, field trips, and extracurricular activities.
- Conduct regular team meetings to discuss updates, address concerns, and provide training on safety protocols and operational changes.
- Collaborate with the Transportation Coordinator and BOCES to align transportation strategies, share resources, and enhance operational efficiency
Operational Management
- Prepare and maintain bus routes, stops, and schedules, optimizing for efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
- Coordinate transportation for special events, field trips, and emergency situations, working closely with the Transportation Coordinator.
- Ensure all buses are inspected, clean, and ready for use daily, adhering to all regulatory standards.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records for payroll, personnel files, maintenance logs, and compliance documentation.
- Work with BOCES to ensure compliance with regional transportation standards and support district-wide initiatives.
Driving Duties
- Serve as an active bus driver for daily routes.
- Model exemplary driving skills, safety compliance, and professionalism for the team.
- Maintenance Oversight
- Monitor the condition of the bus fleet, identifying maintenance and repair needs.
- Coordinate with mechanics or maintenance personnel to ensure timely servicing of all vehicles.
- Maintain and track maintenance schedules for routine checks and repairs.
- Administrative Collaboration
- Assist the Superintendent and Business Manager in preparing transportation budget estimates, monitoring expenses, and recommending improvements.
- Requisition supplies, materials, and equipment needed for transportation operations.
- Serve as a liaison between the transportation department and district leadership, attending meetings as a member of the leadership team.
- Community and External Engagement
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, and the community regarding transportation schedules, changes, or concerns.
- Partner with BOCES to align transportation resources and training opportunities for staff.
- Foster a collaborative and positive working environment within the transportation team and broader district staff.
Skills and Qualifications
Required:
- Minimum of five years’ experience operating school buses or equivalent large automotive equipment.
- Possession of a valid New York State CDL appropriate for school bus operation.
- Ability to manage and supervise a team effectively.
- Strong knowledge of district geography, safety procedures, traffic laws, and school bus regulations.
Preferred:
- Experience in a supervisory or managerial transportation role.
- Familiarity with budget preparation and operational logistics.
- Experience working with BOCES or similar regional service organizations.

- Collaborate effectively with the Transportation Coordinator, BOCES, and district leadership to maintain high transportation standards.
- Demonstrate leadership and accountability in managing day-to-day transportation activities.
- Maintain exemplary driving standards and ensure compliance with safety protocols.
