JOB TITLE: Ophthalmic Technician
OVERVIEW:
Tests and measures eye function to assist Ophthalmologist to diagnose and treat eye disorders and disease by performing the following duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Tests patient's far acuity, near acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, and color perception.
- Examines eye for abnormalities of cornea, and anterior and posterior chambers.
- Applies drops to anesthetize, dilate, or medicate eyes.
- Measures intraocular pressure of eyes (glaucoma test).
- Tests patient's field of vision, including central and peripheral vision, for defects, and charts test results on graph paper.
- Measures axial length of eye.
- Performs other tests and measurements as requested by Ophthalmologist.
- Gives instructions to patients concerning eye care.
- Fill Rx in compliance with physician’s supervision.
- Enter patient information into NextGen system for accurate record keeping.
- Responds promptly to patient needs.
- Maintains confidentiality.
Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
- Knowledge of ocular diseases and systemic diseases affecting the eye.
- Knowledge of ultrasound, visual field, and other machines used for testing.
- Knowledge of basic eye care and hygienic methods and practices involving the treatment of the eye.
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills including the ability to manager interactions with difficult people.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, SKILLS:
- Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two year college or technical school; six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Certification by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology preferred but not required.
- Excellent computer skills in a Microsoft Windows environment.
- NextGen (EMR and PM) preferred
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $22.50 - $28.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40 per week
