JOB TITLE: Ophthalmic Technician

OVERVIEW:

Tests and measures eye function to assist Ophthalmologist to diagnose and treat eye disorders and disease by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Tests patient's far acuity, near acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, and color perception.
  • Examines eye for abnormalities of cornea, and anterior and posterior chambers.
  • Applies drops to anesthetize, dilate, or medicate eyes.
  • Measures intraocular pressure of eyes (glaucoma test).
  • Tests patient's field of vision, including central and peripheral vision, for defects, and charts test results on graph paper.
  • Measures axial length of eye.
  • Performs other tests and measurements as requested by Ophthalmologist.
  • Gives instructions to patients concerning eye care.
  • Fill Rx in compliance with physician’s supervision.
  • Enter patient information into NextGen system for accurate record keeping.
  • Responds promptly to patient needs.
  • Maintains confidentiality.

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of ocular diseases and systemic diseases affecting the eye.
  • Knowledge of ultrasound, visual field, and other machines used for testing.
  • Knowledge of basic eye care and hygienic methods and practices involving the treatment of the eye.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills including the ability to manager interactions with difficult people.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, SKILLS:

  • Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two year college or technical school; six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certification by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology preferred but not required.
  • Excellent computer skills in a Microsoft Windows environment.
  • NextGen (EMR and PM) preferred

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $22.50 - $28.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
