Assistant Director of Transportation and Maintenance

Job Description

Purpose: Coordinates transportation support for a complete range of curricular and extra-curricular activities offered by the Districts schools. Operates a safe and efficient transportation system that transports students to and from schools, and supports participation in school activities. Coordinates and supervises maintenance of all District schools and facilities, to include all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems. Supervises all District custodial and MEP contractors, and transportation staff. Supervises the maintenance of the physical interiors and exteriors of the District facilities and accompanying grounds to a standard operating excellence, safety, cleanliness, and aesthetic attractiveness.

Reports To: Director of Transportation and Maintenance

Supervise: Bus Drivers, Bus Aides, Custodial and Maintenance contractors

FLSA Status: Exempt, salaried

Salary: $50,000- $60,000 per year commensurate with experience

Required Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree in Business or related field with five years experience and/or training in the area of facilities and maintenance.
  • Demonstrated leadership, knowledge, skills, and abilities for this director-level position.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in areas such as building automation systems, and the maintenance of mechanical (to include heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC)), electrical, and plumbing systems.
  • Demonstrated aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities to include financial/budget management, personnel management, and software systems to include Microsoft Office and Google Suites.
  • Possess valid commercial drivers license (CDL) with required endorsements.
  • Meet all State requirements for Bus Drivers, including Defensive Driving and First Aide Certification.
  • Be able to pass initial and random tests for alcohol and controlled substances.
  • Health and Inoculation Certificate on file in the District Office (after an employment offer is made).
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree in Business or related field with five to eight years experience and/or training in the area of facilities and maintenance.
  • Knowledge and experience in bus transportation and routing software systems.

Essential Functions: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.

  • Transportation:
    • Develops and administers a transportation program to meet all the requirements of the daily instructional program and extracurricular activities.
    • Prepares bus routes to serve the students in the District that are convenient yet economically feasible, to include preparing and updating bus schedules for the District.
    • Completes all District/State transportation and maintenance reports as required.
    • Maintains all District-owned vehicles and equipment, to include preventive maintenance plans.
    • Coordinates and supports principals and others responsible for planning special school trips.
    • Works with the principals and drivers in solving discipline problems occurring on school buses.
    • Advises the Superintendent on road hazards for a decision on school closing during inclement weather.
    • If required to drive a bus, must meet all bus driver qualifications.
    • Compliance with all State laws and regulations regarding school transportation.
  • Maintenance:
    • Develops and administers maintenance programs to meet all the daily requirements for the Districts mechanical (to include HVAC), electrical, and plumbing systems.
    • Administers schedules and procedures for the regular, ongoing custodial care of all schools and facilities.
    • Inspects the Districts facilities and grounds on a regular basis for needed repair and maintenance.
    • Coordinates with principals and others responsible for planning school events requiring additional support.
    • Coordinates with building principals for summer maintenance and cleaning issues. Executes a summer maintenance and cleaning program to prepare for the new school year.
    • Maintains the Districts grounds, to include school grounds, playgrounds, parking lots/driveways, landscaping, and fencing.
    • Assists the Director in determining which repair, maintenance, and/or new construction projects are beyond the scope of the USD 207 staff and require outside contractors.
  • Assists with the training and supervision of all custodial and transportation personnel, and makes recommendations on their employment, transfer, promotion, and release.
  • Attends appropriate District, department, and staff meetings when the Director is unavailable.
  • Assists with the maintenance of safety standards in conformance with State and insurance regulations, to include the Districts program of preventive safety.
  • Initiates requisitions for purchases in accordance with budget limitations and District guidance and rules.
  • Submits all reports required by State authorities and/or the Director.
  • Develops recommendations with the Director for future equipment and personnel needs as required.
  • Coordinates with the Director on the ordering or bidding of materials as needed and makes recommendations for supplies and equipment for purchase.
  • Supervises other District employees in a variety of tasks as assigned by the Director or CFO.
  • Assists other personnel in emergencies as called upon.
  • Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information.
  • Regular and consistent attendance at work.
  • Performs such other related duties as assigned by the Director or CFO.

  • Must work in and around dust, fumes, and odors.
  • Must occasionally work in noisy and crowded environments, with numerous interruptions.
  • Ability to enter data into a computer, to see and read a computer screen and printed material with our without vision aids.
  • Ability to hear and understand speech at normal indoors levels, outdoors levels, and on the telephone.
  • Ability to manually lift, push and pull at least 50 pounds.
