Summary:
The Aha Makav Language Learner/Teacher is responsible for ACQUIRING and promoting the Tribe’s
Indigenous language. As part of Mojave Language preservation and generational transmission through
immersion teaching, the Aha Makav Language Learner/Teacher will utilize a wide variety of resources to
enhance student learning. Through a repertoire of teaching strategies and as an advocate of the Mojave
culture, the Language Teacher will have a direct impact on students’ cultural/language development.
What is the Makav Chuukwarch Language Preservation Department
The Makav Chuukwarch Language Preservation Department is dedicated to preserving and revitalizing the
indigenous language and culture of the Fort Mojave Indian Tribe community. Our principles are rooted in
fostering a deep respect for cultural heritage, promoting intergenerational language transmission, and
ensuring linguistic diversity within our educational system. At Anya itpak Elementary School, our vision is
to create a nurturing and immersive learning environment where students can develop fluency in their
native language while embracing their cultural identity. We strive to integrate traditional knowledge with
modern educational practices, empowering students to become confident, bilingual individuals who can
bridge the past and the future, preserving their heritage for generations to come.
Essential Functions:
Aha Makav Language Learner/Teacher shall carry the responsibility in a collaborative learning planning
and implementing Aha Makav Language Learner/Teaching Guide. The Aha Makav Language
Learner/Teacher be able or willing to learn the Aha Makav Language Guide in accordance with the
Makav Chuukwarch Language Preservation Department’s principles and vision statement.
Duties, Responsibilities, and Tasks:
- Develop individual and group Makav learning experiences for students.
- The Aha Makav language team shall work together in the continued design and development of the
- Collaborate and implement a variety of learning experiences to meet Aha Makav language
- Become familiar grade level appropriate language learning developed in the Aha Makav Language
- Use technology appropriately.
- Participate in developing Aha Makav language curricula.
- Listen to and document all sessions with Aha Makav speaking elders.
- Be willing to learn the Aha Makav language from fluent Aha Makav elders.
- Assist and/or refer school staff with language and culture related questions or material to the
- Work in direct contact with students daily.
- Help students understand the importance of the Aha Makav language and its connection to the Aha
Makav culture and traditions and Aha Makav way of life values.

- Create a healthy, safe, welcoming, and comfortable learning environment that supports student
- Create and maintain a respectful and caring classroom climate among all students and between
- Work with students to help them learn while monitoring their progress.
- Participate in as needed Aha Makav parent/teacher conferences in coordination with the school
- Promote and maintain appropriate behavior in the classroom.
- Develop a positive relationship with parents and community members.
- Encourage parents and elders to support students in Aha Makav language growth.
- Conduct Aha Makav family language nights quarterly.

- Work under the guidance and instruction of the Lead Aha Makav Language Teacher and Principal.
- Compliance with the Fort Mojave Indian Tribe Personnel Policy and Procedure Manual and drug and
- Project an image of service and professionalism with a positive attitude.
- Understand and support the relationship between Anya itpak Elementary School and Makav
Chuukwarch Language Preservation Department in accordance with the values, mission, and vision
statement of the Aha Makav language, culture, and traditions.
- Must satisfy the following health requirements as defined in the Tribe/State/Federal program
1. Successfully pass a pre-enrollment drug test upon hire and yearly.
2. Successfully pass a tuberculosis test upon hire and yearly.
3. Provide current immunization verification upon hire.
4. Must be enrolled member or first descendent of the Fort Mojave Indian Tribe.
5. Must be committed and determined to learn Aha Makav language and its teaching
Education:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Valid Driver’s License required.
- College credits or degree toward linguistics a bonus.
Physical Demands:
The candidate must be able to move and interact actively within the classroom, including frequent
standing, walking, bending, and reaching to engage with students and facilitate activities. Additionally,
the position requires the ability to potentially lift and carry materials, equipment, and supplies weighing
up to 50 pounds. This may include setting up classrooms, moving educational resources, and handling
instructional materials. The physical requirements ensure that the teacher can maintain a dynamic and
organized learning environment conducive to student engagement and success.
