JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Substitute Early Childhood Teacher Department: Child Care
Reports To: Director Employment Status: Full Time
Exemption Status: Non-Exempt Classification: Sensitive
Supervisory Status: No Salary Minimum: DOE
Driving Classification: Valid Driver’s License
Summary: The Substitute Early Childhood Teacher will provide temporary classroom coverage as needed,
ensuring a safe and healthy learning environment for children. The substitute supports cognitive, physical,
mental, and social development for children while providing child care services to infants, toddlers, and
preschool age children.
Essential Functions (Duties and Responsibilities) Include the following:
- Arrives promptly to work to set up the classroom for the arrival of the children
- Follows provided lesson plans to lead activities, such as games, storytelling, songs and arts and
- Delegates duties to Teacher Assistants to assist lessons, materials, equipment and supplies needed
- Leads and participates in games, reads to children, and teaching them age-appropriate skills in
- Assists children in hand washing, eating, resting, exercising and toileting
- Encourages children develop habits of caring for own clothing and picking up and putting away
- Maintains discipline in the classroom and outdoor areas
- Documents daily observations, including incident reports, as required by regular staff.
- Supports service of meals, snacks, refreshments and rest periods on the classroom schedule.
- Ensures the classroom remains clean, organized and well-maintained during the shift.
- Contributes to a team effort and accomplishes related results as required
- Knowledge of Early Childhood Development, diet and nutrition guidelines are a plus.
- Knowledge of AZ Early Learning Standards and implementation are a plus.
- Willingness to work with permanent staff to ensure continuity of Mojave traditions, language,
- Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing
- Ability to interact and maintain good working relationships with individuals of varying social and
- Maintains flexibility to work varied schedules on short notice, as needed.
- Contributes to a team effort and performs related tasks as required.
- Administer First Aid to the children as needed
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Director.
Competency:
The substitute must demonstrate the ability to manage a classroom with up to 15-25 children, follow lesson plans
effectively, and adapt quickly to the needs of the classroom while providing safe and nurturing care.
Qualifications:
- Required: Must be 21 years of age.
• Required: One year of classroom or child care experience
- Required: Certified in first Aid and CPR (Adult, Child & Infant certification)

- Required: Current Food Handler’s Certification Card
- Required: Satisfy health and safety requirements as defined by tribal and federal standards,
- Desired: 6-9 Early Childhood College Credits or 30 Early Childhood training certification.
Education/Experience:
- Required: Must have a high school diploma or GED
- Required: One (1) year classroom experience in caring for children in a child care setting is
- Desired: 9-12 Early Childhood college Credits,
Language Ability:
Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
Math Ability:
Ability to calculate chronological age of children for developmental assessment, calculate basic math for
attendance records, and time card calculations.
Reasoning Ability:
Skill in analyzing problems, ability to exercise independent judgement projecting consequences,
identifying solutions, and implementing recommendations, sill in administering disciplinary rules to
children and resolving situational conflicts among children.
Computer Skills:
Must have knowledge to use a computer, with Microsoft Office Software.
Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Material Utilization:
Skill in operating various word processing programs and other office equipment such as copier, computer,
iPad, laptops, scanner, laminator, etc.
Additional Skills Desired:
- Skills in analyzing problems, projecting consequences, identifying solutions, and implementing
- Skill in administering disciplinary rules to children and resolving situational conflicts among
Supervisory Responsibilities:
The substitute does not supervise other staff but must collaborate effectively with teacher assistants and other
personnel.
Work Environment:
The substitute must maintain a safe, age-appropriate classroom environment and follow guidelines for Early
Childhood settings, such as ECERS, CLASS, and I/T Guidelines.
Physical Demands:
he substitute must meet physical requirements, including lifting and moving up to 25 pounds, and performing duties
such as stooping, kneeling, running, or crawling as needed.
