JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary:

The Backhoe Operator will operate specialized vehicles and earth movers. Operators move earth, equipment, tools and materials safely into place.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate a variety of equipment once certified,
  • Operate equipment in close proximity to workers and underground utilities,
  • Perform daily pre-post trip safety, maintenance checks to ensure proper functioning of the equipment or vehicles,
  • Responsible for safe slopes on excavations and proper barricading,
  • Locate utilities and other buried lines prior to digging (test pitting),
  • Perform minor service and refer major issues to the supervisor and dispatcher,
  • Knowledge of trenching and shoring standards,
  • Knowledge of aggregate sizes and classifications,
  • Knowledge of weight requirements of loads,
  • Move materials and objects and operate according to signals from others,
  • Adapt to new and different job sites and team members,
  • Dig, spread and levels dirt, gravel or sand,
  • Adheres to all safety policies,
  • Must wear proper attire at all times including PPE,
  • May be required to work extended hours including evenings, nights, and weekends,
  • Additional duties as assigned.

 

Job Requirements:

  • Ability to obtain a DC operator’s license,
  • Must possess a valid unrestricted driver’s license,
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience,
  • High school diploma or equivalent required,
  • Manage emergency situations, work pressure and stress,
  • Ability to complete work projects on time and in an effective manner,
  • Must be able to successfully pass a background and drug screening.

 

Working Conditions:

  • This job requires the ability to lift, pull, and push a minimum of 50 lbs.,
  • Bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting, and climb heavy equipment several times throughout the day,
  • In addition, you must have the ability to use your hands, arms, and legs repeatedly on the job, 
  • This includes walking on sloped ground, slippery and uneven surfaces,
  • This job requires the ability to sit for extended periods of time.
  • This job requires the ability to see, whether naturally or with vision correction tools (glasses, contacts),
  • Must have physical strength to operate heavy and power-driven equipment,
  • Performing strenuous work in varying temperatures, humidity, wind, or other extreme inclement weather conditions for extended periods of time,
  • Exposure to extremely hot materials, fuel, fumes, vapors, dust, grease and oils, as well as loud and/or constant noise and exposure to heavy equipment.

*Note: This position is considered Safety-Sensitive, and therefore subject to various schedule and unscheduled screenings for controlled substances.
