POSITION DESCRIPTION FOR :

ACCESS BUS DRIVER

Safety Sensitive : Yes Supervisor : Operations Manager / Dispatcher / Operations Supervisor Pay Class : U- Hourly FLSA Status : Non-Exempt Supervises : None

BASIC FUNCTION :

Drives buses in a safe and reliable manner. Provides friendly, courteous service to all passengers at all times. Maintains professional conduct in accordance with company policies and procedures.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Drives routes and operate vehicles and equipment, (i.e., wheelchair lifts, headway signs, radios, fareboxes, ) in a safe and reliable manner.
  • Operates transit vehicle for official transit business only and in accordance with the system's safety plan.
  • Provides customer courtesy to all passengers, including providing information on Citilink services and fares in an accurate and friendly manner.
  • Provides passenger assistance in boarding and deboarding, especially for customers that are elderly, mobility impaired, or who have small children with them.
  • Collect and report passenger fares and ridership in an accurate, honest manner.
  • Completes pre-trip and post-trip inspections according to procedure noting mechanical failures and maintenance needs on defect cards.
  • Provides accurate survey documentation as needed (i.e., boarding / deboarding, shelters / benches, obstructing tree limbs, maintenance issues, etc.)
  • Provides professional radio communications in transmitting information and provides accurate information regarding cancellations, no-shows, route changes, etc.
  • Attends training sessions and staff meetings as required.
  • Maintains a professional image and professional conduct, including a proper well-maintained uniform while on duty.
  • Adheres to company rules and procedures at all times.
  • Follow fixed route procedures, including calling out major intersections, providing assistance, noting check points andtransfer locations.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :

  • High school diploma or
  • Two years of experience as a transit operator preferred.
  • PHYSICAL AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS :

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable an individual with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more and 20 inches or less; ability to judge distance and space to see objects where and as they really are.
  • Ability to observe an area up and down or to the left or right while eyes are fixed on a given point.
  • Push and pull passengers in wheelchairs up and down steps and inclines while exerting forces of 81-108 pounds.
  • Ability to exert pressure in excess of 100 pounds of force
  • Ability to repetitively bend and twist the back.
  • Upper body strength, muscular endurance, and cardiovascular endurance to perform very hard work

  • Pull a wheelchair up or down over a curb
  • Ability to continuously sit for five to 55 minutes.
  • Ability to twist neck 90 degrees on both sides.
  • Assist riders weighing 150-250 pounds.
  • Physical activity includes, but is not limited to : balancing, climbing steps, crouching, dialing, driving, feeling, folding, fingering and grasping belt and supporting fastener devices, handling and speaking with passengers when responding to passenger requests / directions, holding, kneeling, lifting, opening, reaching, (below waist, waist to shoulder, above shoulder), repetitive wrist motion, seeing, sitting, standing, bending, and stooping to place / remove seatbelts and around riders, turning Using computer function boards on farebox, radio and headway sign equipment, walking when pushing wheelchairs, maneuvering wheelchair lifting device on vehicle and writing.
  • Must hold a valid State of Indiana Commercial Driver's license (CDL, Class B), must maintain a good driving record, and must maintain safe driving skills.
  • This is a safety-sensitive position .
  • Must be knowledgeable of the City of Fort Wayne Street network.
  • Must maintain at least a satisfactory level on work performance evaluations.
  • Should have a special sensitivity for the needs of transit dependent, elderly and disabled.
  • COMPENSATION :

    This is a position subject to terms of a collective bargaining agreement.

    Must be able to pass an annual physical examination and alcohol / drug test and participate in ongoing random drug and alcohol testing.
