Position Purpose
Provide / ensure translations and interpretation services for students / families speaking languages other than English are provided in a quality and timely manner and that language proficiency services for selected employees are provided during the year, including summer. Maintain electronic and hard copy records of translations / interpretations and language proficiency services and produce reports as needed.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Program Monitoring
Receives requests and oversees the preparation of written translations of various documents (legal material, news articles, forms, letters / memos, brochures, instructional materials, including international transcripts and so forth)
Reviews Spanish translated material submitted by District personnel and other translator / interpreters and edits for accuracy of meaning, grammar and syntax; arranges for translations in languages other than Spanish to ensure quality and appropriateness.
Updates and manages databases for translations, interpretations and language proficiency services and produces reports as needed for various purposes.
Oversees oral interpretation activities in various languages, including managing and providing directions for use of simultaneous interpretation equipment by District personnel when needed.
Identifies and trains other individuals to serve as member of the Districts’ translations / interpretations cadre.
Administers language proficiency services to selected employees, manages language proficiency events and maintains accurate records.
Schedules and coordinates services from outsourced vendors for translations / interpretations as needed.
Assists Director of Bilingual / ESL in recommending, and administering Translation Services funding.
Serves as a liaison between Translation Services, the District and community stakeholders.

Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws.

Knowledge of spelling, punctuation, syntax, grammar, pronunciation, and text structures of formal English and Spanish.
Knowledge of regional differences in word usage and idioms in English and Spanish as well as cultural and attitudinal differences, customs, and more.
Knowledge of technical and legal-oriented vocabulary.
Ability to interpret / translate to and from English and Spanish without altering the original meaning and intent.
Ability to comprehend and translate vernacular expressions of varying disciplines and interpret nuances.
Ability to incorporate active listening when communicating.
Ability to convey respect by acknowledging, encouraging, supporting and showing appreciation for others.
Ability to conceptualize and to translate complex issues into workable action plans.
Ability to handle office files and records of a confidential nature.
Ability to use computer network system and software to create spreadsheets, databases, and do word processing.

Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms, in both English and Spanish.

Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
Travel Requirements
Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
Physical & Mental Demands, Work Hazards
Tools / Equipment Used : Standard office equipment, including computer and peripherals.
Motion : Frequent repetitive hand motions, including keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching.
Lifting : Occasional moderate lifting and carrying (15 to 35 pounds).
Environment : Works in an office setting; may require occasional irregular and / or prolonged hours.
Attendance : Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position.
Mental Demands : Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions.
Minimum Required Qualifications
Education : Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university.
Certification / License : None.
Experience : 3 years’ interpreting and translating in English and Spanish.
Language : Bilingual proficiency (advanced bilingual / biliterate skills in both Spanish and English).
This is a grant-funded position and is contingent on availability of funds.
