Specialist II – Intervention Services (FRC)

Position Purpose

Performs casework service to help students resolve personal, emotional, and social problems that interfere with their adjustment to school and their ability to enjoy the benefits of the educational process. Serves as a catalyst for bringing together school resources with targeted community resources. Acts as a liaison to resolve difficult and sensitive student support cases including trauma and emergencies.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Provides intake and assessment services for all families referred to the FRC.
  • Coordinates collaborative provision of target services with identified community partners.
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of standardized FRC data collection system to be used by all service providers.
  • Maintains and submits accurate, timely documentation of program and service activity including monthly reports, surveys, needs assessments, action plans, and other required documentation.
  • Identifies and explores causes of students’ dysfunction as it relates to the home, school, and community including making home visits to gather information relating to students; arranges for medical, psychiatric, and other tests and examinations that may disclose causes of difficulties and indicate remedial measures.
  • Works with community resources to identify services for youth and families; acts as a liaison between schools and community resources.
  • Serves as consultant to school personnel regarding students or situations that are not referred for direct District or outside services.
  • Consults with parents regarding their children’s academic performance, behavior, and needs.
  • Informs students and parents of their rights and responsibilities under federal and state law including compulsory attendance.
  • Compiles, maintains, and files all reports, records, and other required documents.

Safety

  • Performs preventive maintenance on tools and equipment and ensures equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing; operates tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and promptly reports any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.

  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education, as well as District policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of comprehensive guidance programs, counseling procedures, intervention skills, student appraisal, and career development.
  • Knowledge of casework methods and counseling skills, including individual and group sessions.
  • Knowledge of prevention and intervention strategies, including behavior management interventions.
  • Skill in collaborating with District and outside agencies and organizations.
  • Skill in maintaining effective interpersonal relationships.
  • Skill in collecting and analyzing complex data.
  • Skill in conducting team efforts to design, implement, measure, and refine programs and services.
  • Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure.
  • Ability to effectively conference with teachers, parents, and students.
  • Ability to present information one-on-one, in small group, and in large group situations to students, parents, and District staff.
  • Ability to exercise discretion regarding matters of a sensitive or confidential nature; and to maintain confidential student records.
  • Ability to use software to create spreadsheets, databases, and do word processing.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both oral and written forms.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
  • Travel Requirements

  • Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required; conducts home visits for students as needed.
  • Physical & Mental Demands, Work Hazards

  • Tools / Equipment Used : Standard office equipment, including computer and peripherals.
  • Posture : Prolonged sitting and standing; occasional stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing / pulling, and twisting.
  • Motion : Frequent repetitive hand motions, including keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching.
  • Lifting : Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds).
  • Environment : Works in an office setting; may require occasional irregular and / or prolonged hours.
  • Attendance : Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position.
  • Mental Demands : Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions. Conducts home visits that may be in isolated or high crime areas.
  • Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Education : Masters degree from accredited college or university in Social or Behavior Science, Public Health, Education, or a-related field.
  • Certification / License : Requires at least one of the following licenses : Valid Texas license as a Social Worker (LCSW, LMSW) granted by the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners; or Valid Texas license as a Counselor (LPC) granted by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors; or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) granted by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Marriage and Family Therapists.
  • Experience :  3 years’ experience required; Experience in family communications, benefits, or other social services work preferred.
  • Language : Bilingual (English / Spanish) working proficiency preferred.
