The Network Engineer is responsible for the planning, design, evaluation, and troubleshooting of secure, mission-critical Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) systems. This role requires expertise in secure protocol suites, communication media configuration, and resolving complex interoperability challenges across multi-level secure networks. The Network Engineer will contribute to modernization efforts, provide technical guidance, and participate in engineering reviews to ensure optimal network performance and security.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan, design, and troubleshoot secure LAN/WAN network systems, ensuring seamless and secure communication.
- Implement secure protocol suites, configure encryption devices, concentrators, and various serial devices.
- Conduct research to address complex network issues and support future modernization projects.
- Resolve interoperability issues between integrated communication stations and production networks.
- Test network system designs in a lab environment and provide comprehensive feedback on performance.
- Participate in engineering reviews and provide technical representation in meetings with senior staff for designated Operating Authority systems.
Technical Skills
- Networking and Security: Proficient in configuring Cisco routers and switches, both on-site and remotely, with in-depth knowledge of TCP/IP protocols and network architecture.
- Routing Protocols: Strong knowledge of IP Multicast (WAN emphasis), local/global DNS configuration, and various routing protocols.
- Network Architecture: Expertise in designing network architectures with zones, screening devices, and other typical design features.
- Cloud Platforms: Familiar with AWS, Azure, and virtual machine (VM) management for cloud-based and hybrid network environments.
- Email Delivery Protocols: Operational knowledge of POP3, SMTP, and IMAP for email delivery.
- Storage Devices: Familiar with direct-attached and network-attached storage devices, protocols, and techniques, including iSCSI.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated expertise in network design, security protocols, and problem-solving within multi-level secure environments.
- Proven experience with Cisco routers, switches, encryption devices, and cloud-based platforms (AWS, Azure).
