What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sustainability Coordinator position at Fortis Construction?
Fortis is currently seeking a passionate Sustainability Coordinator to join our team to help drive our sustainability mission. Fortis has always valued sustainability and we have recently taken steps to deepen our corporate sustainability commitment and priorities. The Sustainability Coordinator will have an exciting opportunity to help influence the company’s future sustainability standards and direction.
The primary purpose of the Sustainability Coordinator role is to oversee sustainability initiatives at Fortis jobsites, educate site teams on sustainability requirements and new initiatives, and support Fortis’s expanding corporate sustainability program under the direction of the Sustainability Manager.
This role will require monthly travel to visit project jobsites (locations include Oregon, New Mexico, Nevada, and Oklahoma).
Responsibilities:
- Support site teams to ensure project sustainability requirements are consistently being tracked and communicated to trade partners- including construction waste management diversion targets, construction indoor air quality procedures, healthy & sustainable materials requirements, and more.
- Integrate with the site to ensure sustainability goals and initiatives are progressing per the plan by spending time with the project teams and walking the sites
- Proactively manages sustainability risk by identifying potential risk and developing fit-for-purpose actions with Sustainability Manager
- Track site sustainability budgets
- Verify and validate sustainability data collected on site to ensure accuracy and timely reporting to clients
- Identify solutions to improve metrics and trends at project sites
- Liaison between client, site team, and Sustainability Manager to research feasibility of sustainability innovations on site based on different client’s corporate sustainability commitments, including:
- Electric/hybrid construction equipment and vehicles
- On-site composting programs in construction office
- Renewable energy solutions on site
- Low carbon concrete and embodied carbon life cycle analysis
- Manage LEED construction-phase data collection processes on site and ensure project teams are supported in collecting LEED-related data and ensure project certification goals are met at project close out
- Support Sustainability Manager in providing education sessions to site teams and Fortis leadership on evolving sustainability strategies, innovation opportunities, and client’s climate action plans
- Collaborate with market partners to communicate client sustainability goals and collect data for sustainability case studies
- Conduct 1-2 site visits per job site each month to build relationships with Fortis site teams and help integrate sustainability into jobsite culture
- Support Fortis marketing team in providing sustainability-related content for project proposals
- Assist Sustainability Manager in developing Fortis' future corporate sustainability mission and goals - including managing data tracking for corporate/jobsite sustainability reporting (carbon, water, waste, materials) to help inform future sustainability standards/reduction targets
- Assist in other duties as assigned, relevant to the achievement of the position's and team's objectives
Qualifications:
- At least three years working in a sustainability role related to the commercial construction industry
- Experience working with construction teams and design teams in documenting LEED or other green building certifications
- LEED AP accreditation and understanding of LEED construction-related credits/documentation processes required
- Ability to work successfully on a construction jobsite with a General Contractor and with subcontractors
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment with a spirit of cooperation and a customer-focused mindset
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate in both verbal and written communication
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software
- Thorough understanding of sustainability in the built environment with a focus on sustainable construction strategies
- Strong attention to detail, organizational, multi-tasking, and time management skills with the ability to manage workload independently
- Excellent analytical, problem solving, decision making, and investigation skills
- Must possess a valid drivers license and a satisfactory driving record in accordance to Fortis policy
Physical Requirements:
Work is performed in a professional office environment. Role is stationary, often standing or sitting for long periods of time, utilizing standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, etc. Communication with internal and external contacts, including speaking and hearing is required. May occasionally push, pull or lift up to 25 lbs.
Travel Requirements:
This role will be 60% support of data center sites, 20% Oregon-based commercial/education/health care projects, and 20% Fortis corporate sustainability support. All Fortis positions require some level of driving.
