Description

We're looking for a Manufacturing Process Engineer to join our Virginia Beach, VA facility! In this role you will collaborate with plant operations to manage and directly impact all Continuous Improvement projects relating to waste reduction and process improvements, conduct data analysis, help standardize processes, and improve efficiencies and performance metrics.

Ideal candidates will have a bachelor's degree and at least 3 years prior experience as a Process Engineer within printing, packaging or other manufacturing.  Experience/knowledge of lean manufacturing and continuous improvement is also required. Looking for analytical, data-driven professionals who can work and think independently and collaborate well with others.

This is an onsite role, working Monday through Friday from 7:00am to 3:00pm.  Additional hours and occasional weekends may be required based on business needs. This position is salaried, with full benefits including a profit sharing bonus, 401k with match, medical, dental and vision, paid time off, paid sick time, holiday pay and holiday bonus, tuition reimbursement and parental leave.

As the Process Engineer you are responsible for planning, facilitating, and managing projects relating to waste reduction and process improvements across the value chain. You will utilize standard processes, conduct data analysis, formal problem solving, coaching, and training of cross functional team members within our manufacturing operations. Guided by data, you will analyze and resolve a broad spectrum of opportunities relating to the production of high volume / high mix label and packaging products. Lastly, as the Process Engineer, you will serve as a knowledge expert in the standardization of core processes, to reduce variability and waste, while improving flow and product velocity.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Analyze and optimize existing printing processes to improve production efficiency and product quality, resulting in reduced waste, costs, and downtime.
  • Identify commonality between product, process, and equipment types, to leverage best practices and deploy the highest level of standardization across company network.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including customer relations, pre-press, scheduling, production, quality, and maintenance, to implement process improvements.
  • Use ERP, shop floor data collections, and visual management tools to facilitate formal problem solving (root cause/corrective action) to address KPIs not meeting expected performance levels.
  • Document operating parameters and equipment configurations to ensure repeatability.
  • Monitor and investigate printing process performance, identifying and resolving issues promptly.
  • Prepare and maintain detailed documentation, including value stream / process mapping, standard operating procedures, and technical reports.
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in printing technologies and materials to drive continuous improvement.
  • Prepare and present reports to the Director level (and above) on results of development efforts including sales and cost savings dollars generated.
  • Support efforts to implement justifiable label technologies to support the strategic direction of the company.
  • Ensure best practices for production are shared between the sites.

Qualifications


Requirements:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in industrial, manufacturing, or mechanical engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in a similar role within the printing, packaging or other manufacturing industry.
  • Strong knowledge of printing processes, technologies, and materials preferred.
  • Experience with digital printing, offset printing, or flexographic printing preferred.
  • Certification in Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing preferred.

  • Proficient in using MS Office and related process engineering software and tools (e.g., Visio).
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Independent and creative “out of the box thinker.”
  • Able to work cross-functionally and collaborate effectively within a multi-faceted team including machine operators, maintenance staff, managers, suppliers, sales and customers.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None.

Training Requirements:

  • Willing to attend required training courses or sessions related to the job as assigned.

Physical Demands:

  • Regular sitting and repetitive office tasks are required. Must be able to remain in a stationary position for up to 50% of the time.
  • Position may enter and interact with production area and is required to stand, crouch, lift or do other physical tasks from time to time.
  • Pass a pre-employment drug test.

Work Environment:

  • On-site office: Standard office environment, adjacent to production.
  • Regular exposure to dust and noise while in the production environment.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Safety shoes and eye protection are highly recommended in the production area.

Travel:

  • Travel as needed in support of the above responsibilities, including occasional travel outside the US.  Initial travel time estimates are expected to be no greater than 20% in a calendar year.
