Description
As the Finishing Shift Lead, you are responsible for the overall Finishing Department operation and activity during your assigned shift. In this role you will verify the quality of supplied rolls and review final products for defects, ensuring the highest quality product for our customers. As the Finishing Shift Lead, you will also ensure finished product meets customer requirements and is delivered to shipping in an accurate and timely manner.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Communicate shift activity to Finishing Manager, such as recurring equipment malfunction, poor quality raw material or production, etc. Provide detailed shift notes.
- Communicate goals and objectives and motivate employees to achieve company standards. Coach employees for performance improvement. Inform Management of poor performance, policy violations or other procedural violations.
- Ensure employees have the required materials and tools to perform their daily job duties.
- Proactively participate in continuous improvement and training initiatives.
- Enforce, uphold and follow all safety procedures and policies. Ensure the safety and well-being of all employees.
- Follow and enforce the production schedule.
- Proactively communicate with Finishing Manager regarding any issues with labels and dies. Communicate with other management staff as necessary to share important information about jobs or production practices.
- Troubleshoot as needed on other finishing equipment.
- Communicate with professionalism and tact in all relationships with customers, vendors, and co-workers.
- Maintain the work area and machines in a clean and orderly condition and follow prescribed Fortis policies and safety regulations.
- Take the lead on safety/near miss/first aid issues that may arise on the shift. Ensure any accidents or “near miss” incidents are properly recorded and reported, immediately.
- Assist in “Second Approver” sign offs for finishing department.
- Verify Core IDs for the finished rolls and place them inside and outside of the roll.
- Place finished rolls in the proper box, verifying the core and box IDs match, and place the box in the designated area for either shipping or stock products.
- Train other employees on rewinder and turrets (in plants where turrets are present).
- Communicate with Finishing Manager regarding any over or under runs, label quality, or ID number questions.
- Proactively identify need for overtime on adjacent shifts. Communicate this need to the Finishing Manager or Production Manager.
- Continually improve leadership and supervisory skills for future growth
- Willing to work alternative shifts and occasional overtime or weekend hours, as required.
- Lead the team by modeling exemplary quality and productivity results.
- Additional duties as required.
Qualifications
Requirements:
Education and Experience:
- High School diploma or equivalent required.
- At least one year of machine operation experience with high mechanical inclination. Printing or packaging-related production experience preferred.
- Experience with manufacturing ERP systems preferred.

- Able to read and comprehend simple instructions.
- Able to calculate simple math (ie: add, subtract, multiply and divide) and use a ruler.
- Intermediate computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
- Motivated by task accomplishment, enjoys doing routine tasks at an accelerated pace.

Training Requirements:
- Willing to attend required training courses or sessions related to the job as assigned.
Physical Demands:
- Lifting, sitting, standing, crouching, and associated repetitive tasks.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs regularly and up to 75 pounds with assistance.
- Pass a pre-employment drug test and subject to random drug screening.
Work Environment:
- Regular exposure to dust and noise in the production environment.
- Warehouse environment temperatures may be influenced by outside temperatures.
Personal Protective Equipment:
- Safety glasses and shoes are highly recommended in the production area.
