Position Overview: The Academic Advisor plays a critical role in supporting students' academic
achievement, personal growth, and career development. The advisor helps
students understand their unique development, acquire essential skills, and
prepare for success in an ever-changing world. By presenting a comprehensive
guidance program, the Academic Advisor assists students in creating
personalized high school pathways that help them realize their highest goals,
overcome obstacles to learning, and develop personal responsibility while
navigating educational and societal challenges.
Job Duties: • Provide direct academic support to homeless and foster youth
- Adjust student’s class schedules determined by ability level and skill
development as suggested by teacher, parent, and/or student.
- Provide individual counseling as needed for personal, vocational, or
academic issues.
- Monitoring student attendance, keeping official rolls and forwarding
written reports to the office -noting tardies and special requests for
absences.
- Arrange for and preside over student study teams and parent/teacher
conferences.
- Provide counseling for students with two (2) or more F’s on either
progress reports or report cards.
- Junior and senior year: monitor credit checks and counsel students with
deficiencies.
- Interpret and explain PSAT, SAT, ACT, ASVAB, STAR, and CAHSEE
test results.
- Provide career counseling activities through classroom visitations, and
assisting with Career Fair and College Night.
- Senior counselor - coordinate visitation of college representatives and
vocational schools.
- Attend IEP meetings. Act as administrative designee in the event of the
absence of an administrator.
- Coordinate 504 placements, monitor progress and communicate with
teachers of students with 504 Accommodation Plus.
- Keep abreast of and update knowledge of curriculum changes and
requirements within various courses and departments.
- Keep abreast of and update knowledge of college admission
requirements.
- Attend bi-monthly DCA meetings.
- Conduct registration activities each year.
- Consult with vice principal about attendance and discipline issues.
- Coordinate referrals to counseling services, parent services, and medical
services.
- Consult and confer with East High School, Fortuna Union High School,
Independent Study staff, and Strongs Creek Community Day School
regarding student transfers.
Minimum • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, or California
Qualifications: teaching credential
- PPS Credential preferred
- Prior experience in academic advising, student support, or related fields
preferred
- Prior to employment must complete DOJ fingerprinting
- Proof of tuberculosis (TB) test clearance.
