What are the responsibilities and job description for the Part Time Copy Editor position at Forum Communications Company?
Forum News Service is Minnesota's online source for news that matters. This regional news wire delivers local news to Minnesota and the surrounding communities and is part of Forum Communications Company, a 5th-generation family-owned media company with 20 publications across the Upper Midwest that collectively deliver local news to more than 5 million readers every month.
SUMMARY
Responsible for editing copy to create a dynamic and accurate well-designed newspaper. Monitor wires and newspapers for major regional, national, and international news stories and pictures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Edits local and wire stories to conform to AP/local style. Stories should be free of grammatical errors or misspellings. They should also be accurate, clear and balanced.
- Writes/edits headlines that capture the tone and impact of a story without compromising accuracy. Headlines should be eye catching and appropriate for the story.
- Verifies facts, dates and statistics for stories being published in the paper.
- Selects photographs and graphics for stories.
- Ensures timelines are met to make production schedules.
- Maintain prompt and reliable attendance.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, mass communications, graphic design or a related field.
- Two or more years of experience editing for a newspaper or magazine.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
- Knowledge of AP style.
- Strong visual communication.
- Ability to be flexible and work under pressure and deadlines.
- Must be able to move between copy editing and page layout.
- Experience with Publication or related software and/or graphics design.
Expected compensation for this role is between $19 and $20/hour, based on qualifications and experience.
