The Grand Forks Herald is hiring a full-time sports reporter to produce in-depth stories on sports
events, news, and trends with a likely emphasis on Division I college basketball and high school
athletics.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Consistently produce compelling and interesting daily content.
- Original sports reporting and stories, with an emphasis on sports news, sports features,
- Create daily digital content - a combination of original content and curation of local, relevant content and information for digital and social media audiences.
- Develop and maintain relationships with local sports sources.
- Drive audience loyalty and digital growth through engaging and timely content.
- Assist in posting to social media channels as a way to engage the community, share content and updates, and drive loyalty among readers.
- Collaborate with other content creators and news/sports teams in the Forum Communications Co. network to identify strong sports-related regional, state, and niche content that will appeal to our readers.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent education in journalism and experience in a professional newsroom is preferred. Exceptional recent graduates will be considered.
- Strong organizational, time management and people skills are essential.
- Flexibility is required; ability to write with confidence on multiple topics.
- Ability to work on deadline, handle sensitive and emotional situations, balance competing demands, set priorities, and juggle several issues at once.
- Photography skills a plus; ability to shoot video or willingness to learn.
- Accuracy and ability to write clean, crisp copy in a fast-paced environment.
- Must have a valid driver's license with a driving record that is insurable by the company.
- Work hours include nights, weekends, and some holidays.
Expected compensation for this role is between $17 and $20/hour, based on qualifications and experience.
