Sheriff's Department - Academy - Class 48Academy Description Below:

Regional Training Academy

Join the highest paid Sheriff's Office in New Mexico!

The Academy is approximately twenty-eight weeks long and is a forty hour work week with weekends and Holidays off.  The Academy is based off the NMLEA 775hr Law Enforcement Certification.  The Sheriff’s Office also adds additional specialized training for a more comprehensive training experience with over 1000 hrs of training in total.  The major area of training include criminal and traffic laws, patrol, criminal investigations, driving, firearms, crisis intervention and defensive tactics.

Transitioning Military Members:

We recommend beginning the hiring process 4-6 months prior to their separation date. This timeline allows us to streamline their transition and ensure continuity. Even if their separation occurs several months before the start of the academy, we can initiate a pre-hire process. This approach offers several benefits:

  • Early Onboarding: Pre-hiring starts their retirement time with us, activates their benefits, and ensures financial stability.
  • Paid Interim Work: They will earn $23 per hour during this period while working within the Sheriff's Office, providing meaningful employment without the need for a short-term job prior to the academy.
  • WHAT TO EXPECT

The selection process consists of a PIQ and PHS, one (1) written exam, a physical agility exam, a background investigation, an oral interview, a polygraph examination, a psychological examination, and a medical examination.

Upon satisfactory completion of these requirements, all qualified applicants will be submitted to the Sheriff for final selection.

What do I get paid while I am in the Sheriff’s Office Academy?

BCSO cadet’s receive a base pay of $23.00hr plus any overtime as earned in the academy.

Is the Sheriff’s Office Academy a ”live in” academy?
