Position: Director, Workplace Safety  

Job Description:

The Director, Workplace Safety responsibilities includes planning as well as a tactical leadership of site wide EHS management systems, EHS regulations, and industry best practices. Primary responsibilities will include management of all Environmental, Health and Safety requirements to assure compliance, reduce costs, and maintain consistency. This position is responsible for influencing site leadership to improve EHS management and performance in their areas of responsibility. Utilize their knowledge of FMCSA’s Compliance, Safety and Accountability (CSA) Program, DOT, and OSHA Regulatory requirements to provide support to all Forward Air terminal locations.  The Corporate Director, Workplace Safety will report directly to the Senior Vice President of Safety.

Core Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory standards
  • Responsible for ensuring the safety of the workplace across all business units
  • Ensure that all company and OSHA safety standards are always followed by all employees
  • Develop company-wide safety standards for all departments and employees to follow
  • Coordinate, administer and implement comprehensive training programs in occupational, industrial, and environmental safety
  • Responds to reported accidents to evaluate current best practices and recommend changes where necessary after determining root causes
  • Supervise direct reports, including administrative staff and regional safety managers
  • Lead and direct, plan work schedules, assign or delegate work daily, develop and mentor employees and take corrective actions when necessary
  • Have a working knowledge of OSHA safety rules and regulations at all levels of government, including federal and state
  • Oversee safety audits and inspections to ensure compliance with occupational and environmental health and safety requirements
  • Develop, implement, and maintain employee training programs 
  • Develop, update, and manage workplace safety programs, procedures, and policies
  • Facilitate communication and cooperation between management and employees on safety issues
  • Conduct accident Investigations
  • Attend Safety seminars to stay current with FMCSA and OSHA Rules and Regulations
  • Responsible for all aspects of Safety within the organization
  • Accident management with first call responsibility in cooperation with maintenance and operations
  • Approximately 50% of overnight travel by plane and car is required
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor or master’s degree in Safety, Engineering, Science, Industrial Hygiene or at least 5 years of experience in a safety leadership role
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of Department of Transportation (DOT), Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) rules and regulations
  • Must have excellent computer skills and be functional with several types of software including Microsoft Office
  • Strong written and oral communication skills including the ability to explain and present regulations to others
  • Must be able to demonstrate poise, tact, diplomacy, and possess good judgement and discretion
  • Strong budget and planning skills
  • Must be able to create, retrieve and maintain information and reports
  • Must be detail oriented, well organized, and possess effective time management skills
  • Ability to influence people at all levels of the organization
  • Ability to manage and work effectively with a diverse workforce 
  • Knowledge of all applicable safety rules and regulations: DOT, DMV, FMCSA, Hours of Service understanding

Skills:

  • The ideal candidate will possess a “can do" attitude with a “will do" work ethic
  • Must have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with AS400 operating systems is a plus
  • Transportation industry knowledge and experience is a plus
