The AE is also responsible for fueling, pollution control, liquid load and ballasting, logs and record keeping, procurement and inventory control, and storage and accountability of all HAZMATs. Depending on the vessel, the AE may act as Chief Engineer or the engineer in charge of a watch in a periodically unmanned engine room.
Qualifications :
Valid USCG MMCAssistant Engineer - Oceans, Any HP, Limited - 1600 GRT / 3000 ITC License (may sub 3a / e, 2a / e, or 1a / e Motor License)Valid STCW with all required endorsements (including, but not limited to Officer in Charge of Engineering Watch, Advanced Firefighting, and Medical Care Provider)Lifeboatman EndorsementValid TWICValid Passport - must be able to travel internationally with no restrictionsCPR / First AidA physical and pre-employment drug test are also pre-requisite of employment.Essential Functions :
Vessel Maintenance
Troubleshoots and repairs all engines, pumps, machinery, deck machinery, and electrical componentsMaintains proper markings, tags, and color coding of various systemsResponsible for general housekeeping of engineering spacesSafety
Responsible for proper maintenance of onboard alarms and safety systemsResponsible for safety of personnel in engine roomMiscellaneous
Responsible for monthly engineering reports to be submitted to managementUtilizing the company's maintenance software(Helm) for tracking and executing preventative maintenance.Maintains vessel parts inventory levelsWorks on deck as needed : handles lines, makes / breaks towOther jobs as directedSupervisory and Leadership of Direct Staff
Supervises and trains junior engineers on maintenance proceduresServes as Foss "Field Representative" during major machinery overhaulsPerforms all Vessel Maintenance System - Engine Room inspectionsTrains deckhand-engineers in preventive maintenance proceduresKnowledge & Skills :
Strong maritime background with a thorough understanding of vessel operations and equipment capabilities / limitationsAbility to independently implement all routine engineering proceduresImplements appropriate casualty control measures in response to engineering casualtiesReads / interprets technical data, specifications, and drawingsBasic knowledge of welding and burning procedures and hot work safety precautionsAbility to safely transfer fuel and oilsKnowledge of MARPOL regulations and pollution prevention proceduresMaintenance and operation of bilge, ballast, fire, fresh water and sanitary systemsAbility to communicate, in English, across all written, spoken and listening levelsWorking Conditions : Works in engine room in hot, wet, humid, noisy, and odorous conditions. Occasionally exposed to paints, solvents, thinners, and fumes.
