Description
The Foundation for Blind Children (FBC) is seeking Residential Mentors to support our summer residential programs for high school students (ages 14-19) with visual impairments. These five-week programs, which include the Teen-to-Work and College Prep tracks, are designed to help students develop the independence, career readiness, and life skills needed for success in higher education, the workforce, and beyond. As a Residential Mentor, you will play a vital role in helping students navigate daily living tasks, preparing for job placements, and engaging in recreational activities.
You will be responsible for assisting with the supervision, guidance, and support of students in their living units and throughout the program. You will work closely with program instructors to monitor student progress, provide feedback, and ensure that students are safe, prepared, and supported in all aspects of their transition experience.
Both programs also include a variety of social and recreational activities, such as bowling, ropes courses, indoor skydiving, escape rooms, ice skating, movie theaters, swimming, fitness classes, and more, providing students with opportunities to engage, have fun, and build confidence. Additional Information:
- Living Arrangements: Housing is provided on campus at no cost, with most meals included. This position offers a unique opportunity to engage with students in a residential setting and create lasting educational experiences.
- Travel Reimbursement: Travel reimbursement is available to those traveling from outside of the Phoenix area.
- Work Schedule: The program runs from June 3rd, 2025 – July 12th, 2025. The schedule will include 30-40 hours per week, with some evening and weekend activities as needed to support student engagement. Training will be provided on June 4th, 2025 as well as virtually prior to the program start date. Individual staff working schedules will be provided by May 1, 2025, but please keep flexibility in mind week by week for scheduling changes the week prior.
Duties include:
- Supervision and Support: Assist with the direction, supervision, and organization of students in their living units, during activities, and throughout the program. Ensure students are awake, prepared, and on time for daily activities.
- Adaptation: Help students adapt to different situations in the program, and helping them exercise independence while participating activities.
- Safety and Emergency Procedures: Ensure students are properly supervised at all times and are aware of emergency procedures. Be familiar with and able to implement all emergency protocols related to the program.
- Collaboration with Instructors: Work closely with instructors to monitor student performance in various courses, providing feedback and offering guidance to students as needed.
- Program Participation: Actively participate as a member of the program staff, helping deliver and supervise students during day programs, special events, and other activities.
- Documentation and Reporting: Report and document notable concerns or incidents to Management staff in a timely manner.
- Coaching and Mentoring: Monitor student improvements and offer coaching when necessary. Provide constructive feedback to students and assist them in areas of personal or academic development.
- Shift Scheduling: Shifts may take place during the week or on weekends, depending on program needs, and will be communicated in advance.
- Other Duties: Perform other duties as they arise to ensure the smooth running of the program
Qualifications
- Experience: Prior experience working with high school students with visual impairments is preferred. Experience with coaching high school students and mentoring them.
- CPR, AED, and First Aid Certification: Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certification required.
- Skills: Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Ability to offer guidance, support, and constructive feedback to students.
- Communication: Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for working with students, families, and colleagues in a respectful way.
- Commitment to Safety: Ability to ensure students’ safety at all times and follow emergency procedures.
- Teamwork: Ability to collaborate with a diverse team of instructors and program staff to meet the needs of students.
- Skills: Strong ability to manage time, develop lesson plans, collaborate effectively with others, and track student progress.
- Flexibility: Willingness to adapt to a changing schedule, including participation in field trips, weekend activities, and additional program support as needed.
