The role of the Classroom Special Education Teacher is to manage the day-to-day routine of a classroom, working with students who are blind or visually impaired in a private day setting. The Classroom Special Education Teacher adapts and modifies curriculum for students with a wide range of learning, mental, emotional, and physical disabilities. Teaching all academic skills, such as literacy, mathematics and science along with communication techniques, to students with severe disabilities. The Classroom Special Education Teacher will collaborate with the Teacher of the Visually Impaired and the related service team to create meaningful activities for all students.
Job duties include:
- Collaborates with the Teacher of the Visually Impaired to adapt lessons
- Maintains all aspects and provisions of confidentiality related to Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
- Provides case management services for students on individual education plans (IEP) including all requirements related to the IEP and compliance of federal, state and district regulations/requirements
- Provides direct instruction to students as specified in the individual education plans
- Maintains accurate and complete data records as required
- Provides coaching and training to classroom staff based on students' individual education plans
- Supervises and evaluates classroom Paraprofessionals
- Maintains on-going communication (written and verbal) with parents/guardians
- Provides a safe learning environment with an effective classroom management plan
- Establishes and maintains good rapport with students, employees, community members and vendors
- Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality
- Collaborates with related service providers
- Coordinates and monitors each student’s daily, routine medical needs including monitoring overall health, monitoring and documenting seizure activity, and provide direction and supervision of para-educators’ attention to these needs
- Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree preferred) from accredited college or university in Special Education required
- Current Arizona Special Education Teaching Certificate required
- CPR/First Aid/AED
- Experience with PECS System and Structured Teaching (preferred)
- Experience in teaching a self-contained classroom
- Basic computer skills, knowledge of IEP management systems
- Article 9
- Valid Arizona Driver’s License
- IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card issued by the Arizona Department of Public Safety, or ability to attain a Clearance Card.
Salary : $48,000 - $68,000
