Provide a basic core program for handicapped students consistent with State education code requirements
- Screening of preschool students through CHILD FIND
- Work cooperatively with classroom teachers who have exceptional students in regular classes, interpreting the abilities and disabilities of these students
- Confer frequently with parents and professional staff members regarding the educational, social, and personal needs of exceptional students
- Assist professional staff members resolving the unique psychological and / or disciplinary problems for exceptional students
- Implementation of paperwork for initial preschool evaluations.
- Assist the exceptional student in making an assessment of his / her abilities and in establishing educational and occupational goals in keeping with these abilities
- Keep attendance and all other records pertinent to the Special Education Program for State reports
- Prepare progress reports and year-end evaluations, administer pre- and post- tests as appropriate and necessary
- Assist parents to understand the specific problems of exceptional children and the goals and operation of the program, apprising them of problems and progress
- Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and time designated
- Plan a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students in accordance with State and District requirements for curriculum
- Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students
- Prepare for assigned classes. Show written evidence of instructional planning following established District format
- Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals. Based on these goals, establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, etc.
- Encourage students to set and maintain acceptable standards of classroom behavior
- Employ a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the students
- Assist students to become self-directed learners
- Understand and apply knowledge about student growth and development in order to provide maximum student learning
- Implement the District's philosophy of education, the instructional goals and objectives
- Participate in school goal settings, achievement and assessment
- Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provide progress reports as required
- Enforce safety precautions and guidelines to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities
- Maintain accurate, complete, correct records as required by law, District policy, and administrative regulations
- Assist the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student behavior and conduct. For the classroom, develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintain order in the classroom in a fair and equitable manner
- Make provisions to be available for educational related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested
- Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for teacher aide (s) and volunteer (s) and provide input on aide / volunteer performance
- Maintain and improve personal / professional competence
- Attend staff meetings and serve on District / school committees as required
- Prepare substitute guidelines and lesson plans in a timely manner
