What are the responsibilities and job description for the Staff Development Nurse position at Four Seasons Rehabilitation & Care?
The primary purpose of this position is to plan, organize, develop and direct all in-service education programs throughout the facility in accordance with current applicable federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations and as directed by the Director of Nursing to assure that the highest degree of quality resident care can be maintained at all times.
Administrative Functions
· Develop, implement and maintain an effective training program for all new and existing staff.
· Create methods to identify and track current staff skill sets, competencies and training needed.
· Ensure that all direct care staff have received training in areas required by federal regulations.
· Ensure all required in-service training for Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) is complete and that in-service training is sufficient to ensure the continuing competency of nurse aides.
· Revise the in-service training program as necessary based on changes to the resident population, physical environment and staff turnover as identified in the annual facility assessment.
· Implement system for tracking hours and attendance records to support mandatory training requirements; maintain records for inspection and review by state and federal agencies.
· Review training content for updates needed to remain consistent with current professional standards and guidelines.
· Implement a system which allows CNAs and trainees to provide feedback, express concerns and request additional training for challenging situations or merging concerns (i.e., new pandemic, etc.).
· Secure, develop and maintain records, reports, instructional manuals, reference materials, etc., pertinent to in-service education programs.
· Provide reports/recommendations to the Director of Nursing concerning in-service training programs; submit requests for tools, training and resources required to meet professional standards.
· Assume the authority, responsibility and accountability of directing the in-service education programs.
· Coordinate with department supervisors in obtaining and scheduling speakers to present in-service training programs; ensure content is current and reflects current standards.
· Ensure that in-service training classrooms or areas are properly prepared in advance of the scheduled training session; assemble sign-in sheets, continuing education unit (CEU) tracking logs, informational packets and post-training evaluation tools.
· Assist in standardizing the methods in which work will be accomplished.

· Assist licensed nursing personnel (i.e., registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and Nurse Aides) in obtaining CEUs to keep their license current in accordance with state law.

· Post jobs on social media and job sites, manage the budget.
· Ensure that all personnel attend and participate in annual facility in-service training programs (e.g., Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), tuberculosis (TB), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), abuse prevention, safety, infection prevention and control, emergency preparedness and response, etc.).
· Participate and assist in departmental studies and projects as assigned or that may become necessary.
· Others as deemed necessary and appropriate or as directed by the DON or Administrator.
Duties & Responsibilities

Committee Functions
· Serve on various committees of the facility as required by existing regulations and as appointed by the Administrator.
· Meet with department supervisors on a regularly scheduled basis, solicit advice concerning their training needs and assist in identifying and correcting problem areas and/or improving services.
· Implement recommendations from the Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) Committee as they relate to the educational needs of the facility.
Personnel Functions
· Coordinate with facility leadership in the development and implementation of an onboarding program for all staff and departments; ensure mandatory training requirements are met per facility policies and regulatory requirements.
· Coordinate in-service activities and programs with all departments in accordance with established facility policies and procedures, current standards of care and regulatory requirements.
· Coordinate with the Director of Human Resources and department supervisors for the development and implementation of annual employee check offs; ensure the training program reflects those deficient areas identified in the check offs as required by regulation and facility policies.
· Ensure that individual employee training records are maintained and filed in the employee’s personnel record.
· Create a staff development and training schedule which addresses the mandatory requirements and coordinate with supervisors on supplemental training and/or retraining as appropriate.
· Manage the clinical schedule and rotate call with nurses assigned.
· Communicate the in-service training calendar to supervisors and facility staff utilizing effective methods including email, nursing report, posting notices and/or software utilized by facility for training purposes.
Equipment and Supply Functions
· Organize the preparation, scheduling and selection of instructional material, equipment and training aids to meet the training needs of the facility staff.
· Recommend to the Director of Nursing or Administrator the equipment and supply needs of the department.
