About the Position
The Financial Controller manages the company’s finances, and completes processes such as payroll, reporting, and budgeting. Staying up-to-date and accurate on financial entries, and communicates a clear, thorough picture of finances to the management team when needed or requested. The Financial Controller is the primary support for the company’s accounting and operations teams - facilitating efficient flow of information for accounting and project management.
Responsibilities
- Manage and streamline accounting operations, including the monthly and yearly financial close
- Prepare financial reports and analyze financial data
- Manage Work-in-Progress (WIP) to track project costs and revenue, while addressing over-billing or under-billing to ensure accurate financial reporting and proper revenue recognition
- Lead the Accounting Assistant ensuring timely, accurate processing of invoices, maintaining vendor relationships, and ensuring compliance with internal controls and financial reporting standards
- Supervise and coordinate financial reporting, accounting, billing, collections, payroll, and budgeting functions
- Oversee financial planning, budgeting, and procurement activities
- Ensure accurate execution of financial tasks while maintaining confidentiality
- Perform payroll processes, including pay calculations and deductions, following policies and procedures
- Develop and implement internal control policies for budget administration, cash/credit management, and accounting
- Stay current with organizational policies, federal/state regulations, and accounting standards
- Prepare or direct the preparation of financial statements, business reports, and regulatory filings
- Analyze financial data to identify opportunities for improvement and growth
- Advise leadership team, owners, and board members on financial goals, policies, and strategies
- Coordinate audits to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations
- Develop budgets and forecasts with management for profit and cash flow planning
- Adjustments and corrections to the General Ledger as needed
- Coordinate the registration and renewal of company vehicles, ensuring all vehicles are properly titled and compliant with state regulations
- Oversee the timely and accurate filing of state tax returns, including sales tax, payroll taxes, and other state-specific filings, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations
- Ensure annual insurance audit is completed by reviewing coverage and compliance to reflect accurate premiums and claims in the company’s financial records
- Perform other tasks as assigned by leadership to ensure smooth operations and organizational efficiency
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field
- At least 5 years of experience in financial management or accounting with at least 2-3 years in a construction-related financial role
- Experience with financial reporting, including P&L statements, balance sheets, and budgets
- Experience with construction accounting principles, such as job costing, revenue recognition, and progress billing
- In-depth understanding of financial controls, compliance regulations, and tax laws
- Ability to manage cash flow and budgets for construction projects
- Understanding of construction contracts, subcontractor agreements, and procurement processes
- Experience with ProCore or other related project management software
- Experience with QuickBooks Desktop or other related ERP/accounting software
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite for financial modeling
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field
- 8-10 years of experience in financial management or accounting with 5 years in a construction-related financial role
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA)
