About the Position
The Lead Fabricator will play a pivotal role in the fabrication and assembly of high-quality mechanical components, specifically ductwork and other sheet metal products. This role requires advanced technical skills and strong attention to detail. You will be responsible for overseeing all stages of fabrication, ensuring the highest standards of quality, accuracy, and safety, while maintaining a productive and efficient work environment.
Responsibilities
- Receive project information from project managers and ensure all necessary details are gathered to clearly outline fabrication requirements.
- Perform welding tasks to assemble or repair metal components, ensuring strong, clean, and precise welds that meet quality standards.
- Draw plans for ductwork/fabrications and program the plasma cutting machine to execute accurate cuts; manually cut pieces when required.
- Select appropriate gauges and types of sheet metal based on product specifications.
- Inspect individual parts, assemblies, and installations using precision measuring instruments like calipers, scales, and micrometers to ensure accuracy.
- Operate and maintain machinery such as plasma cutters, roller, rotodie, shear, punch press, hand brakes, and others to cut, shape, and form sheet metal.
- Drill, punch, and fasten seams and joints together using bolts, rivets, or other methods to assemble components or repair sheet metal items.
- Trim, file, grind, deburr, buff, and smooth surfaces, seams, and joints of assembled parts using hand tools and portable power tools.
- Apply insulation to ductwork using glue and pinspotter as required.
- Conduct quality checks on fabricated pieces to ensure they meet accuracy and quality standards.
- Perform regular maintenance on equipment, making necessary repairs or modifications to ensure operational efficiency.
- Train, supervise, and provide guidance to Production Fabricators or new shop employees, ensuring accurate, productive, and safe work practices.
- Set performance standards for the team, monitor progress, and provide constructive feedback to help team members improve.
- Track inventory levels in the shop and report needed supplies to the manager for reordering.
- Analyze information and evaluate results to determine the best solutions to fabrication challenges or issues.
- Communicate with external clients, vendors, and other stakeholders to represent the company in a professional manner.
- Perform other tasks as assigned by leadership to ensure smooth operations and organizational efficiency.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- At least 5 years of experience in welding and sheet metal fabrication, particularly with ductwork or mechanical systems.
- Strong knowledge of fabrication processes and blueprint reading.
- Experience operating machinery such as plasma cutters, shears, punch presses, and welders.
- Ability to accurately measure and inspect parts using tools such as calipers, micrometers, and scales.
- Ability to work with various hand tools and portable power tools, including grinders, drills, and deburring tools.
- Familiarity with safety protocols and best practices for fabrication and machining.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot issues during the fabrication process.
- Ability to work in physically demanding environments, including standing for long periods, lifting heavy materials, and operating machinery.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Post-secondary education or vocational training in a related field (e.g., welding, sheet metal, mechanical engineering).
- Certification in welding or sheet metal fabrication (e.g., AWS, SMAW, or similar).
- OSHA 10-hour or 30-hour safety certification or ability to obtain.
- Previous experience in a lead or supervisory role within a fabrication shop.
- Experience with specialized fabrication tools and equipment such as rotodies, hand brakes, and weight machines.
- Experience in insulating ductwork using glue and pinspotter.
- Familiarity with inventory management and tracking shop materials and supplies.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Knowledge of industry standards, regulations, and best practices in mechanical contracting.
- Ability to work with or troubleshoot automated machinery and plasma cutting systems.
