Job Description - Custodial
Dept: Ancillary Services
Reports To: Custodial/Maintenance Supervisor
SUMMARY: To provide a safe, attractive, clean and comfortable environment for students, staff and the general public within a specific area of responsibility as directed by the Coordinator of Ancillary Services or designee.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.
The Custodian shall:
- Select needed work items from utility supply room, load service cart, move to work area.
- Return unused supplies, deposit trash in incinerator, clean cart and equipment at conclusion of work shift.
- Maintain building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways and play areas, in a clean, safe condition.
- Regulate heat, ventilation, and air condition systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to ensure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity.
- Remove snow and ice, sand walkways, driveways, parking areas, and steps, as appropriate.
- Check daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.
- Raise the United States flag at or about 8:00 a.m. on each school day and lower it at or after 3:30 p.m.
- Sweep classrooms, dust furniture and shelving, and dispose of refuse daily in assigned work areas.
- Clean corridors after school each day and during the day when conditions require it.
- Scrub and disinfect toilet room floors and clean all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains in assigned work areas daily.
- Wash all windows on the inside at last once each year in assigned work area.
- Maintain all floors in a clean and attractive condition as well as in a good state of preservation.
- Clean chalkboards in assigned areas at least once a week.
- Make minor building repairs.
- Report the need for major repairs promptly to the head custodian.
- Report any damage to school property to the building principal in a timely manner.
- Remain on the school premises during school hours as well as during non-school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and custodial attendance is required by the principal.
- Assume responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each school day and determine that all doors and windows are secured and all lights, except those needed for safety reasons, are turned off.
- Maintain an inventory of supplies, equipment, and fuel on hand, and requisition such needed replacements from the principal in a timely fashion.
- Move furniture or equipment within buildings as may be required for various activities and as directed by the principal.
- Comply with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste.
- Assume responsibility for the safe condition of the swimming pool (high school only) and conduct all necessary water tests, backwash the filters, and refill the pool as necessary.
- Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must have a valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routing reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before small groups or employees of the District.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with ten’s and hundred’s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication. Ability to drive between school buildings. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all District requirements and Board of Education policies.

The employee is frequently required to stand or walk; use hands or fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and talk and hear. The employee must have the physical dexterity to operate equipment. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee must frequently squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools. The employees will frequently bend and twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job. The employee must be mobile, so as to move about the school premises. Specific vision requirements include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Occasionally, yet essential to this position, the individual must meet deadlines with time constraints, interacting with the public and other workers.
The employee must be able to perform the following physical tasks:
- Lift or carry equipment, supplies or bulk materials up to 100 pounds
- Carry, lift, stand or walk with repetitive use of hands to manipulate
- Assemble scaffolding and climb heights of up to forty feet
- Use stepladder and access school roofs for repairs in inclement weather
- Work beneath buildings to correct plumbing/heating problems
- Operate a truck, snow plow and salt spreader
- Use trenching/compacting equipment
- Use power tools
Occasionally, the position requires the employee to work irregular or extended hours, meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff. The employee is also required to shovel snow and/or operate snow blowers during winter months.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee works indoors and outdoors as the task requires. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, spray, and non-household dust. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. Frequently the employee will work alone or with coworkers.
The noise level in this position varies from quiet to loud.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: The Custodian is a bargaining unit position with salary and benefits established by contract and Board action.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the Coordinator of Ancillary Services and Building Principal.
