Director for Campaigns and Creation Care

The Franciscan Action Network (FAN) seeks a dynamic associate for creation care advocacy and movement building. This is a mid-level position, located in NE Washington DC, and is open immediately. FAN is a 501(c)3 organization and is committed to building a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community among staff, board, and our broader network.

Organization Information

Inspired by the Gospel of Jesus and the example of Saints Francis and Clare, the Franciscan Action Network is a collective Franciscan voice seeking to transform United States public policy related to justice, peace, care for creation, and human dignity. Founded in 2008, the organization serves a large network of Franciscan religious communities as well as laypersons who identify with the Franciscan charism. Using strategic and deliberate processes to bring about change in policies and practice, FAN educates and mobilizes its constituents to help them realize their power and give effective public policy input. As a small staff, we operate in an inclusive, mutually supportive manner.

Job Description

The Director for Campaigns and Creation Care will work with the executive director, the director of Franciscan Justice Circles, and other staff to expand, support, and mobilize FANs growing network of Franciscan-hearted advocates. Specific duties will include leading policy advocacy on creation care issues as well as developing and implementing movement building strategies, particularly through FANs local affiliate groups called Franciscan Justice Circles. This is a mid level position that offers an outstanding opportunity to develop policy advocacy and movement building skills within the field of faith-based advocacy. This position reports to the executive director.

Advocacy

  • Organize and carry out advocacy in Washington DC on creation care issues and other issues as needed. Advocacy methods include meeting with elected or appointed U.S. officials and organizing as well as participating in letter campaigns, social media campaigns, and public rallies.
  • Facilitate advocacy by members of FANs nationwide network by educating and mobilizing them at the national, state, and local levels.
  • Develop close working relationships with DC-based faith-inspired and other organizations to coordinate advocacy efforts

Franciscan Justice Circles

  • Work closely with Franciscan Justice Circles director to help nurture Circles (local affinity groups), for example by meeting with interested parties virtually or in person
  • Reach out to specific groups, including faculty or staff at Franciscan colleges and universities, to found Circles
  • Play a pivotal role in helping to plan FANs annual Franciscan Justice Leadership Conference
  • Develop written and multimedia materials on Franciscan spirituality and justice issues for use in Circles
  • Other

  • Complete development tasks as a member of the team, including helping to raise funds for the work and manage donor relationships
  • Assist as a team member in FAN events, including helping to facilitate technology for webinars, create video or audio content, etc
  • Participate in in-person events in Washington DC including meetings, rallies, and staff events
  • Job Qualifications

    Required :

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent work experience
  • 3 years work experience in advocacy, movement building, or related fields
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with an emphasis on collaboration
  • Demonstrated commitment to issues related to justice, peace, integrity of creation, and human dignity
  • Flexibility and strong multitasking abilities
  • Willingness to learn about Franciscan spirituality
  • Ability to work and participate in frequent advocacy activities in Washington DC (some remote work is permitted)
  • Desirable :

  • Knowledge of Franciscan spirituality as well as Catholic social teachings
  • Knowledge of U.S. government policy and legislative processes
  • Experience in public communications
  • Experience in campus ministry and / or peer organizing
  • Social media skills
