WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT
- Provide Direct Patient Care Gather information on patients' illnesses and medical history to guide the choice of diagnostic procedures for therapy. Explain test procedures and safety precautions to patients and provide them with assistance during test procedures. Discuss quantities of radiation involved and the safety margin involved in the procedure. Understand human anatomy and the test process to generate usable images, which sometimes requires repositioning the patient. Ensure the correct tests are done for each patient and that the results are forwarded to the right department.
- Operate Equipment Position the patient and equipment correctly to produce results with the best quality. May assist to recline the patient on the table for the test. Use the machine to create an image that shows a map of the body tissues, with the areas of heavier and lighter radioactivity marked in different colors.
- Images and Recording Produce a computer-generated or film image for interpretation by a physician. Record and process results of procedures. At times, superimpose the PET image over a CT or MRI image to make it more useful, combining information on the tissues appearance and function in a single image.
- Radiation Safety Procedures Follows radiation safety procedures.
- Quality Control Oversees quality control of PET and CT utilizing phantoms.
- Patient Exams Performs patient exam, glucose screening, administer isotope dosage.
- Patient Assessment Assesses patient and patient history.
- NRC Documentation Completes NRC documentation.
- Patient Education Educates patients.
Qualifications
- Required Certificate in Radiology
- Required Basic Life Support Program (BLS) - American Heart Association
- Required within 1 1/2 years of hire Nuclear Medicine Technician Certification Board (NMTCB) - The Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board
- Required Nuclear Medicine Technician Certification Board (NMTCB) - The Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board or Radiography (ARRT-R) - The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or Computed Tomography (ARRT-CT) - The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)
- Required Nuclear Medicine Technology (ARRT-N) - The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)
- Required X-Ray Operators (OPCERT) - State Licensing Board
- Preferred Associate's Degree
- Preferred Bachelor's Degree
