GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
Under direct supervision, the purpose of the position is to provide general upkeep, sanitation, and maintenance of school buildings, facilities, and grounds. Employees in this classification perform custodial and general maintenance work. Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate physical effort, typically involving some combination of reaching or bending, and that may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (40-100 pounds). Performs related work as directed.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Job Functions

- Cleans, sanitizes, maintains, and provides for the general upkeep of building facilities and grounds.
- Empties trash containers, pencil sharpeners, and other receptacles.
- Cleans and disinfects drinking fountains, daily or more if needed.
- Vacuums carpets; sweeps and mops floors; dusts, cleans, and polishes furniture and woodwork.
- Identifies and reports all maintenance problems.
- Changes light bulbs, and air-conditioner filters, and assures air-conditioner vents are dust-free; stocks supplies as necessary.
- Performs general maintenance work, i.e., changing light bulbs, cleaning air filters, repairing towel dispensers, and painting.
- Cleans bathroom toilets and sinks; replaces paper supplies and soap in restrooms.
- Utilizes various cleaning agents, mixing according to label instructions, and using in accordance with prescribed safety precautions and directions.
- Utilizes various custodial and general maintenance equipment, i.e., mops, brooms, buffers, pressure cleaners, and blowers.
- Assists lunchroom personnel in handling, moving, and stacking heavy crates, and boxes.
- Acts as a safety and security monitor at all times.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to adhere to prescribed routines and practices.
- General knowledge of, and ability to utilize materials, methods, and equipment used in janitorial work.
- Ability to carry out assignments with minimal instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors.
- Ability to work independently to carry out assignments to completion.
- Ability to perform duties with a professional and cooperative work ethic.
- Ability to climb, reach, bend, stoop, kneel, sit, and stand for extended periods of time; ability to lift up to 40 pounds, and 100 pounds intermittently.
- Ability to work at heights up to 12 feet.
- Ability to work in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees for extended periods of time
- Ability to withstand exposure to dust, mold, fiberglass,and various chemicals.
- Ability to work flexible hours necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
Education / Certifications / Experience
High school diploma or GED preferred; supplemented by demonstrated ability to fulfill the physical requirements of the work; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; and to bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead.
