Job Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Accountant to join our finance team. The Accountant performs financial analysis functions in support of the county' financial operations. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of accounting principles and practices, along with proficiency in various accounting software. This role is crucial in ensuring accurate financial reporting, compliance with regulations, and the overall financial health of the organization.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Designs and prepares monthly financial reports for presentment to the County Manager and Franklin County Board of Commissioners
- Performs cash flow and fund balance analysis, revenue and expense projections, and project analysis
- Monitors accounts for appropriate transactions, tracks revenue and expenses based on projection models, and identifies errors or issues related to revenues or expenses
- Enters and posts journal entries to record financial activity while maintaining records in an organized manner in accordance with state record retention laws
- Researches local and national economic trends that may impact the county, best practices for financial administration and budgeting, and possible sources of revenue
- Coordinates the annual audit of financial statements with external audit firm and prepares year-end journal entries and reconciliations for this process
- Assists in the preparation of monthly financial reports and other reports as needed
- Reconciles bank accounts, works with the bank regarding debits and credits, transfers funds between accounts to record cash, and advises on best practices for banking operations
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Requires an Associate’s or Bachelor's degree in accounting or like field experience with 2 years of experience preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of accounting and budgeting practices, and knowledge of applicable laws and regulations to include (GAAP & GASB)
- Knowledge of standard government fund accounting principles, practices and procedures
- Knowledge of computer based financial systems administrative and managerial processes
- Knowledge of auditing principles
- Skilled in the use of a computer, the evaluation of personnel, and oral and written communication
CERTIFICATION, LICENSE AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires a valid State of Georgia Driver’s License.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work requires standing, walking, sitting, lifting up to 20 pounds, carrying, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling, speaking, hearing, and seeing. The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed in an office environment with a moderate amount of noise.
Experience
- Proven experience as an Accountant or in a similar role within the finance sector.
- Strong knowledge of general ledger reconciliation and balance sheet management.
- Familiarity with financial software applications and accounting software is essential.
- Demonstrated financial acumen with the ability to analyze complex financial data effectively.
- Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail to ensure accuracy in all aspects of accounting tasks.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
