Job Summary
This job involves mixing and applying chemical and materials to roadside right-of-ways to control noxious vegetation, all related paperwork, and the maintenance of application equipment. It also involves processing household hazardous materials for storage and shipment.
Essential Functions
- Responsible for the required daily paperwork and maps;
- Supervises Chemical Applicator I;
- Maintains truck (washing and servicing);
- Completes light repair work on trucks and sprayers;
- Assists in the selling of chemicals to the general public;
- Maintains a neat appearance around buildings and surrounding areas;
- Helps maintain shop in an orderly fashion;
- Assists in shop work;
- Loads and unloads chemicals;
- Assists in proper storage of chemicals;
- Properly cleans and maintains sprayers (including backpack sprayers);
- Welds with arc welder; operates cutting torch and other hand tools;
- Assists in Recycle Center as needed;
- Paints equipment and facilities;
- Processes and segregates HHW by the following categories:
o Bulk used oil;
o Bulk used anti-freeze;
o Bulk oil based paints;
o Bulk and recycle latex paints;
- Lab pack and proper storage of HHW including pesticides and other hazardous waste;
- Properly labels pesticides, other wastes and prepares for shipping of household hazardous waste;
- Keeps HHW room clean and in a safe working condition;
- Assists with State surveys and inspections;
- Operates chainsaw to cut brush in the off spraying season or emergency storm damage;
- Operates snowplow and/or salt spreader on Noxious Weed trucks;
- Performs related work as required by Noxious Weed Lead Chemical Applicator;
- Assists in housekeeping in Noxious Weed building
- Sprays and controls noxious weeds along County roadside right-of-ways; bare grounds, fairgrounds, and county yard;
- Prepares tank mixes to spray on identified noxious weeds;
- Researches and orders parts, supplies and equipment;
- Responsible for reporting information on state survey maps and reports;
- Performs maintenance on equipment;
- Reports infestation areas of noxious weeks within county to Lead Chemical Applicator;
- Assists in delivery and pick up of election equipment;
- Assists with projects needed for other county departments;
- Services county van when needed;
Performs related work as required.
Knowledge of:
- Spraying equipment including use and minor repairs;
- How to properly load chemical in truck.
Skill In:
- Communicating a positive attitude, empathy, energy and helpfulness to customers or co-workers and to provide the assistance customers or co-workers need;
- Mixing and applying chemicals;
- Maintenance of application equipment;
- Interpreting weather conditions as it pertains to applying chemicals.

- Safely operate equipment: shop, tools, forklift, spray truck, skid steer, rubber tire loader, GPS data collection system and other light equipment;

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
- Must take, pass and maintain the Kansas General Commercial Applicator Certification test and the Pesticide Applicators test in categories 6 and 9A within first 6 months of employment;
- Must take, pass and maintain the 24 hour Household Hazardous Waste training within the first year of employment;
- Must possess and maintain a valid Kansas driver’s license.
REQUIRED EDUCATION/OR EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma or GED;
- or one year to two years related experience and/or training;
- or equivalent combination of education and experience.
