Job SummaryUnder general direction of the Division Chief, the Captain provides the first line of leadership to the EMS crew. The Captain oversees and assists with the activities of EMS department employees providing emergency care to victims of accidents or sudden illness, and transporting them to hospitals or other facilities as needed. The Captain is expected to make decisions within established policies and procedures. At times, however, the Captain must be able to operate in emergency situations which may require innovative action. Work may involve considerable physical exertion. Work is performed under general supervision of the EMS Chief, Assistant Chief and/or Division Chief, who reviews work methods and results through reports and inspections.
Essential Functions
- Sets an exemplary example for peers and co-workers in professionalism, respect, loyalty, integrity, work habits, ability to follow direction, conduct, attitude and appearance;
- Leads the EMS crew by monitoring, reviewing and assisting with the training of new employees and remediation of current employees;
- Ensures the EMS crew's compliance with the department's policies, procedures, protocols, and organizational directives at ALL times regardless of shift assignment;
- Provides coaching and mentoring to the EMS crew;
- Ensures that response times are within current EMS policy are followed.
- Oversees and assists in responses to emergency ambulance calls and renders on-site extrication and emergency care;
- Oversees and assists in maintaining and cleaning vehicles, equipment and facilities;
- Oversees general duties of the shifts;
- Attends departmental training sessions;
- Reviews patient care reports (PCR) to ensure completeness;
- Reports actions of employees that violate procedures and/or protocols that may lead to disciplinary action;
- Organize hospital transfers;
- Assists Division Chief with crew evaluations;
- Other duties as assigned.
Secondary Functions
- Performs other related duties as required.
Supervisory Functions
- Is responsible for assisting with the overall direction and coordination of the assigned shift;
- Assists in the enforcement of the organization's policies and applicable laws;
- Assists with training employees, planning, assigning, and directing shift work;
- Provides input to upper management on subordinate personnel performance;
- Takes corrective action and reports violations in procedure and/or protocols to upper management;
- Assists in the resolution of problems.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations
- Certified training in approved State of Kansas Paramedic or AEMT course required.
- Possess Instructor certification in CPR, ACLS, and PALS, or obtain within six (6) months of hire.
- Valid class C Kansas driver's license required.
Required Education and/or Experience
- ALS Certified provider in good standing with the Kansas Board of EMS
- Three years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience;
- Previous leadership experience in EMS desired;
- Any combination of job related experience and/or training which would produce the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Preferred Education and/or Experience
- Associate's degree in Health Administration, Business Administration, Management or a related field from an accredited four-year college or university;
- or four to five years related experience and/or training;
- or equivalent combination of education and experience.
