WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR FCMC
Our Medical Assistant/Laboratory Technician cares for patients under the direction of a physician, working alongside providers and clinical staff to collect specimens, assess and educate patients, and assist with procedures. More specifically, these important responsibilities include:
- Obtaining and documenting patient history and reason for seeking care in Electronic Medical Record (EMR); entering provider orders into EMR as authorized; and reviewing patient EMR prior to scheduled appointments
- Rooming patients, obtaining vitals, and documenting appropriate information in the EMR
- Preparing for and assisting the physician or provider with in-office procedures
- Performing medical office functions, including: ear irrigation, peak flow meters, venipuncture, injections or immunizations, in-house labs, and preparing biopsy specimens
- Communicating with patients over the phone to assess, give instruction, and provide test results
- Completing referrals to specialists and following up as needed
- Partnering with patient care coordinators to provide patient assistance
- Completing and tracking prior authorizations
- Performing basic triage per specific office protocols; recognizing and responding appropriately to urgent/emergent situations
- Assisting the provider with patient education including results of lab and X-ray reports, proper diet and exercise, and laboratory and radiology preparation
- Maintaining work area, instruments, and medical supplies, including sterilizing equipment, stocking medical supplies, and maintaining exam rooms
- Updating and filing all daily paperwork, lab logs, and maintenance logs
- Recording proper lot numbers of all controls, calibrators, and reagents
- Attending daily huddles, scrubbing charts beforehand and documenting discussions afterwards
Requirements
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED
- Completion of accredited medical assistant program
- 1 year of experience in an office environment is preferred
- Working knowledge of medical terminology, uses and care of laboratory equipment, basic physiology, and protocol for aseptic procedures
- Knowledge of CPT and ICD-10 coding procedures
- Knowledge of medications and injection procedures
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
- Proficiency in faxing and email and collaboration systems (e.g. 365, Google, Monday)
- A service-minded work ethic with a drive to meet client care needs and a positive attitude when faced with ambiguity and change
- Ability to prioritize tasks and delegate when appropriate
- Ability to interact effectively with people from widely differing backgrounds
- Good communication skills, both written and oral, in English
- Interpersonal and conflict resolution skills
- Organizational skills, time management skills, and attention to detail
- A strong ability to analyze and problem solve
Essential Job Functions:
- Regular and predictable attendance is required
- Regularly required to sit, bend, stoop, and stretch
- Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and other office equipment
- Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate reports
- Requires frequent lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds
- Specific vision abilities include seeing and reading reports and data
- Must be able to hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergencies
- This role includes prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
- Must be able to access and navigate throughout the department within the organization’s facilities
- Must adhere to HIPAA privacy and security requirements
- Must wear PPE when situations require
- Must submit to COVID-19 testing as required by CMS and other regulatory agencies according to FCMC policy
- Have full COVID-19 vaccination (some exemptions allowed)
Work Environment:
- FCMC operates 24 hours per day each day of the year: operational needs of departments may require that you be available to work all shifts, weekends, and holidays to meet the needs of the patients
- Potential exposure to blood, body tissue and fluids, contagious diseases, and hazardous waste
- Occasional exposure to bodily injury, loud or unpleasant noise, unpleasant odor, and emotional or physical stress
- May be required to work day or night in a confined environment or a variation of different temperatures
