An employee in this class performs professional basic life support work in operating an approved mobile medical unit, rescuing victims, and performing basic emergency care including the administration of life sustaining treatment to patients on-site and while enroute to hospital. Work involves responding to the scene of emergency and non-emergency calls, applying necessary medical treatment to sick or injured persons, and transporting persons to a medical facility. Employee serves as a member of an ambulance crew and is responsible for the medical care administered to the patient. Employees perform emergency medical procedures at the EMT level. Work includes participating in community outreach education and prevention programs, preparation of vehicles, cleaning of vehicles, building and grounds, and participating in continuous in-service training. Work requires considerable independent judgment in assessing the condition of patients and applying short-term relief. Work is performed in accordance with established Emergency Medical Standard Operating Guidelines and Procedures Manual and under local medical director approved protocols. Work is performed under the supervision of a Paramedic Captain and is evaluated based upon verbal and written performance reports, through observation, and periodic conferences. Responds to emergency calls, providing basic life support treatment to patients, as well as transportation to the appropriate medical facility; functions at the Emergency Medical Technician level; abides by the Franklin County government safety standards and regulations.
Performs emergency medical acts in accordance with protocols and standards established by the EMS System and Medical Director; administers approved medications via approved access routes, performs pulmonary ventilations, performs patient assessment and basic life support techniques in accordance with established protocol including: airway management and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, oxygen administration, hemorrhage control, treatment for shock, bandaging and dressing soft tissue injuries, splinting of fractures and dislocations, treatment of injuries to the head, face, eye, neck, and spine, treatment of injuries to the chest, abdomen and genitalia, provision of basic life support for medical injuries, assisting in normal and abnormal childbirth, treatment of injuries as a result of exposure to heat and cold, treatment of burns, lifting and moving patients for transfer to a medical facility and assists the paramedic, as needed, in preparing for Advanced Life Support care.
If requested may respond to non-emergency calls, such as requests to transport patients from hospital to their homes, patient homes to non-hospital facilities, or from a local medical facility to a specialized medical center under the direction of Franklin County EMS leadership.
Participates in a continuous training program to improve competence in medical technical work and in and operation; studies street and road patterns and networks of the County in order that future runs may be made with minimum difficulty and delay.
Inspects and tests EMS units and apparatus daily, maintaining proper inventory of equipment and supplies; cleans and sanitizes vehicles, units, apparatus and equipment daily; ensures that they are in proper and good working order; reporting other than minor defects for specialized attention to Shift Captains.
Maintains cleanliness and performs minor maintenance of Emergency Medical Service facilities; cleans, sweeps, mop, etc., daily.
Assists with direction and control during disaster situations.
Participates in informal training activities and in formal in-service training classes to maintain required certifications; attends other training opportunities.
Participates in community outreach programs.
Assists with First Aid and CPR classes.
Promotes prevention awareness and provides information on services that are available.
Completes required paperwork and reports.
Monitors departmental email, at minimum, once every day on duty to ensure staying up to date on operational and clinical advancements, advisories, or changes in procedures that could impact performance of daily duties and responsibilities.
