What are the responsibilities and job description for the Paramedic position at Franklin County (NC)?
An employee in this class performs professional advanced life support work in operating an approved mobile medical unit, rescuing victims and performing advanced emergency care including the administration of life sustaining treatment to patients on-site and while enroute to hospital. Work involves responding to the scene of emergency and non-emergency calls, applying necessary medical treatment to sick or injured persons, and transporting persons to a medical facility. Employee serves as a member of an ambulance crew and is responsible for the medical care administered to the patient. Employees perform emergency medical procedures at the certified Paramedic level. Work includes participating in community outreach education and prevention programs, preparation of vehicles, cleaning of vehicles, building and grounds, and participating in continuous in-service training. Work requires considerable independent judgment in assessing the condition of patients and applying short-term relief. Employees are exposed to the normal hazards of emergency rescue work, including risk of exposure to human body fluids and infectious diseases, thus the work is subject to the OSHA requirements for bloodborne pathogens. Work involves Work is performed in accordance with established Emergency Medical Standard Operating Procedures Manual and under local medical director approved protocols. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Shift Captain. Responds to emergency calls, providing basic and advanced life support treatment to patients, as well as transportation to the appropriate medical facility; functions at the EMT-Paramedic level; abides by the Franklin County government safety standards and regulations.
Performs emergency medical acts in accordance with protocols and standards established by the Franklin County EMS System, NC State Office of EMS and Medical Director(s); administers approved medications via approved access routes, administers specified solutions by vascular access infusion, performs pulmonary ventilations and obtains 12-lead EKG’s for cardiac diagnostics; performs patient assessment and basic life support techniques in accordance with established protocols including, airway management and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, oxygen administration, hemorrhage control, treatment for shock, bandaging and dressing soft tissue injuries, splinting of fractures and dislocations, treatment of injuries to the head, face, eye, neck, and spine, treatment of injuries to the chest, abdomen and genitalia, provision of basic life support for medical injuries, assisting in normal and abnormal childbirth, treatment of injuries as a result of exposure to heat and cold, treatment of burns, lifting and moving patients for transfer to a medical facility.
If requested, they may respond to non-emergency calls, such as requests to transport patients from hospital to their homes, from a local medical facility to a specialized medical center, or any other approved medically necessary transport.
Participates in a continuous training program to maintain competence in medical and operational skills; studies street and road patterns and networks of the county to ensure that future responses are made with minimum difficulty and delay.
Inspects and tests EMS apparatuses, maintaining proper inventory of equipment and supplies; cleans and sanitizes vehicles, units, apparatus and equipment daily; ensures that they are in proper and good working order; makes routine adjustments, but reports other than minor defects for specialized attention.
Maintains cleanliness of Emergency Medical Services facilities; cleans, sweeps, mops, etc.
Assists with direction and control during disaster situations.
Participates in informal training activities and formal in-service training classes to maintain required certifications; attends other training opportunities.
Participates in community outreach programs; conducts training in First Aid and CPR classes; attends programs such as Tar River Festival, Safe Kids, Bike Rodeo, car seat awareness, etc. to promote safety and prevention awareness and to provide information on services.
Completes required paperwork and reports.
Monitors Departmental email, at minimum, once every day on duty to ensure staying up to date on operational and clinical advancements, advisories, or changes in procedures that could impact performance of daily duties and responsibilities.
