CUSTODIAL WORKER Revised: January 3 2022
Position Description Non-Exempt
OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF JOB
To clean and maintain assigned areas, buildings, facilities and grounds within the County.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF JOB
- Sweeps, mops, vacuums or scrubs floors.
- Cleans furniture, bathrooms, windows, walls, floors and fixtures.
- Collects and properly disposes of trash, garbage and recyclables.
- Loads/unloads, moves supplies or items to/from proper or designated locations.
- Disinfects specified areas as required.
- Assists in securing buildings and assuring that windows and doors are properly secured.
- Reports major problems or breakdowns to Supervisor.
- Operates cleaning equipment; stripping and waxing of floors as needed.
- Assists with training of new custodians as assigned.
- Tests new cleaning products and supplies and reports results to supervisor.
- Assists with delivery of election materials.
- Uses personal protective equipment (PPE)/materials as required.
OTHER DUTIES OF THE JOB
- Assists with making minor repairs to furniture, fixtures, etc.
- Assists with painting or wall washing as needed.
- Performs other job related duties as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives occasional instruction and some supervision from Supervisor in regard to daily work duties.
SUPERVISION GIVEN
None. May act as lead worker at the discretion of the Custodial Director when necessary.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Works indoors in adequate work space, lighting, temperatures and ventilation.
- Works with average indoor exposure to noise stress and disruptions.
- Above normal indoor exposure to dust/dirt.
- Exposure to cleaning supplies and chemicals daily.
- Subject to periodically working in adverse conditions or various outdoor elements, depending on nature of job assignment.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must possess ability to record, convey and present information, explain procedures and follow instructions.
- Must be able to walk, stand, twist and bend for long periods throughout the workday,with daily kneeling, stooping, climbing-to include ascending and descending stairs throughout the buildings, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching and grasping necessary to carry out duties of job.
- Dexterity requirements range from simple to coordinated movements of fingers/hands; feet/legs; torso necessary to carry out duties of job.
- Light work, with occasional lifting/carrying of objects with weights of up to 50 pounds.
- Must demonstrate emotional stability.
- Must be able to cope with the physical and mental stress of the position.
- Must be able to move frequently throughout the work day.
- Must possess above average strength and physical endurance.
QUALIFICATIONS
A. EDUCATION/TRAINING
High school diploma or equivalent.
B. WORK EXPERIENCE
1-2 years experience working in custodial environment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
- Must be able to speak and understand the English language in an understandable manner in order to carry out essential job duties.
- Must possess ability to function independently, have flexibility and the ability to work effectively with clients, co-workers and others.
- Must possess ability to perform a variety of custodial work both inside and outside; have above average strength and endurance and coordinated use of all appendages.
- Must possess ability to exercise care in the use of chemicals and cleaning materials.
- Must possess ability to operate various equipment such as vacuum cleaner, carpet extractor, floor scrubber, etc.
- Must possess ability to act as lead worker in custodial department and assume some additional duties as necessary.
- Must be able to travel to other County buildings as assigned.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
