REGISTERED NURSE/LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSE
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The Registered Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse is responsible for the delivery of inmate care through the process of collecting health status data, nursing diagnoses, goal setting, planning, implementation and assessment. In addition, the RN/LPN works in a team relationship with other medical staff to accomplish and supervise the completion of daily nursing duties. This includes but is not limited to conducting health intakes on inmates, administering to the health needs of the inmate population, maintaining adequate supplies, supervising the distribution of medication, maintaining complete and accurate records and statistical data, and assisting in accordance with prescribed policies and procedures. Performs related work as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the direct supervision of the Health Services Director, or an employee of higher grade, who reviews work and performance through oral and written reports for conformance with rules and regulations.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: At the direction of the HSD, experienced RNs and LPNs may be required to assist in providing instruction and training to nursing colleagues and may be assigned specific shift duties.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Collects health status data assessing the physical, psychological and social dimensions of inmates. Analyzes collected data and formulates a documented nursing diagnosis which is communicated to other members of the healthcare team. Develops implements and evaluates a written plan of nursing care, identifying realistic short and long term goals with measurable and anticipated behavioral outcomes. Provides input to the performance evaluation review process for non-supervisory nursing personnel on a regular basis. Participates in the development and implementation of policies, procedures, rules and regulations of the Health Care Unit. Collaborates with physicians and other members of the team to develop and initiate health review. Supervises the preparation of records of nursing care and other treatments given inmates. Plans and supervises the implementation of various nursing care techniques. Responsible for the security of all medications, supplies and equipment. Supervises emergency medical care given in accordance with policies and procedures. Participates in the recruitment and orientation of new nursing personnel. Assists with medical histories and physicals on inmates. Triages inmate sick slips and completes inmate sick visits as required. Assesses inmate’s health status and refers to appropriate level of health care provider. Assists providers with inmate examinations, treatments and medical/surgical procedures. Implements and follows up on providers written orders. Teaches health care information to inmates and staff. Collects samples, specimens and cultures per provider orders. Assists in identifying recurrent health problems, symptoms and behavioral changes of inmates. Assists in maintaining a clean, safe and neat environment in the medical area. Prepares and administers medications prescribed for individual inmates in accordance with established procedures, maintains proper levels of inventory all on medications. Provides emergency medical treatment to inmates. Maintains all equipment in working condition and immediately reports equipment problems to supervisor. Reports all emergency and important medical problems to supervisors.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of a current and valid license as a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing, maintains license by completing annual training and CEU requirements. Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of nursing care both emergency and general care. Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of supervision. Working knowledge of prescription pharmaceuticals. Ability to act calmly, make decisions and act quickly in emergency and dangerous situations. Ability to interact with people who are under physical and/or emotional stress. Ability to understand, explain and apply the laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, specifications, standards and guidelines governing assigned unit activities. Ability to maintain accurate records, determine proper format and procedure for assembling items of information and prepare reports. Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written expression. Ability to adapt to varying work situations. Knowledge of record keeping procedures and legal aspects of medicine. Ability to thoroughly read, understand, and follow medication distribution directions. Ability to work with minimal supervision. Ability to work flexible work shifts, weekdays, weekends, and holidays. Ability to establish and maintain rapport with persons from different ethnic, cultural and/or economic backgrounds. Ability to maintain accurate records. Ability to follow fairly complex written and oral instructions. Ability to maintain harmonious working relationships with others. Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time. Valid Massachusetts Driver’s License. Regular and predictable work attendance.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
SHIFT: 36 hr. per week position. Three 12hr shifts, 5p-5a. Includes weekends. Shift schedule to be determined by the administration
SALARY: $58,313.97 – $93,461.23 (salary is commensurate with experience and licensing)
GRADE: 17 – 21A
FRINGE BENEFITS: Full fringe benefit entitlements in accordance with State Personnel Policies and the CBA covering this position.
