ROAD MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN I
- Patrols Franklin County roads and assists employees in identifying hazardous areas and needed repairs.
- Performs a variety of road maintenance work including patching of chuck holes, cutting brush, burning weeds, painting, and flagging.
- Employees in this classification are responsible for driving and/or operating trucks and other construction and maintenance equipment, including special attachments and/or towing trailer-mounted equipment, satisfactorily.
- Patrols Franklin County roads and identifies hazardous areas and needed repairs. Constructs, maintains, and repairs roads and related structures.
- Assists in training and overseeing the work of employees less experienced with maintenance and repair activities and equipment operation.
- Checks road signs for vandalism or damage from natural causes and reports to Traffic Control Technician.
- Employees in this classification satisfactorily operate all vehicles requiring a Class 'A' CDL.
- Patrols Franklin County roads and identifies hazardous areas and needed repairs. Constructs, maintains, and repairs roads and related structures in assigned district.
- Sets a standard of excellence leading by example in training and overseeing the work of employees less experienced with maintenance and repair activities and equipment operation.
- Checks road signs for vandalism or damage from natural causes and reports to Traffic Control Technician.
- Employees in this classification expertly operate all vehicles requiring a Class 'A' CDL.
- Operates a variety of heavy and specialized vehicles or equipment to perform assigned duties related to maintenance and repair of native, gravel and paved roads, and of bridges, structures, culverts and other drainage facilities.
- Installs, paints, and repairs guard rails, signs, and sign posts as needed.
- Performs a variety of minor repairs and preventative maintenance on equipment, and tools; assists mechanic in servicing and repairing vehicles.
- Pursues self-development and continuing personal development of skills and knowledge by attending ongoing educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, and establishing personal networks.
- Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques and related tools, equipment, and technology as they relate to area(s) of assignment according to current department and County practices. - Proficient knowledge of road systems, conditions, signs, and signals. (General knowledge required for Technician I, proficient knowledge for Technician II, expert knowledge for Technician III)
- Proficient knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply Washington State road specifications and survey markers applicable to work assignments.
- Knowledge of industry work hazards and safety procedures. (Proficient knowledge required for Technician I & II, expert knowledge for Technician III)
- General skills in troubleshooting and resolving issues or problems by analyzing problems, identifying alternative solutions, interpreting compliance documentation, projecting consequences of proposed actions and implementing recommendations in support of goals.
- General time management and mental and physical organization skills that support the ability to focus, have clarity, and use strategy to fulfill a variety of tasks successfully.
- Demonstrated skills in the operation of specialized and heavy road maintenance equipment, such as grader, backhoe, front end loaders, dump truck, and other complex heavy equipment. - Proficient skills in using hand and power tools to perform semi-skilled work.
- Ability and willingness to establish and maintain communication and working relationships with peers, representatives from other agencies, vendors, public officials, and the general public using courtesy, tact, and good judgment.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High School Diploma, OR G.E.D.
- One year of truck and/or heavy equipment operation experience in road maintenance or related field. (Three years’ experience required for Technician II, 5 years for Technician III)
- Any combination of education and experience which would provide the applicant with the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job.
- Employment at Franklin County is contingent upon the results of a background check and eligibility for coverage by the County’s liability insurance carrier. Depending upon the position, background checks may include personal and professional references, social security verification, education and professional licensing verification, financial history, and criminal history.
- Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a Class "A" CDL Driver's License with an 'N' –Tanker endorsement within six (6) months of employment for certain approved Team Leader jobs required.
- Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a DOT Medical Certificate.
- Ability to obtain a Flaggers Certification within six (6) months of employment required.
