What are the responsibilities and job description for the GIS Mapping Technician position at Franklin County?
NATURE OF WORK
Under general supervision, creates and maintains various layers of data for the County’s Geographic Information System (GIS) and the ownership database.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
- Maintains the County’s parcel layer; crates new parcels of land; edits existing parcels.
- Updates ownership records; interprets deeds and other legal documents.
- Assists County departments, surveyors, other cities, and the general public with acquiring maps and related information.
- Compiles various data and information.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work is performed in a standard office environment and involves sitting for extended periods of time, standing, walking, bending reaching, and lifting of objects up to 25 pounds.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent some college course completion preferred; AND three (3) years of mapping experience.
Depending on area of assignment, a valid Driver’s License, Notary Public License, and/or other specialized certifications may be required.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
Knowledge of:
- Modern office procedures.
- County and department policies and procedures.
- Cadastral mapping, GIS systems, and related software.
- Customer service and phone etiquette.
Skills in:
- Interpreting legal documents.
- Completing mathematic calculations.
- Working independently.
- Operating a computer and mapping and drafting equipment.
- Demonstrating attention to detail and organization.
