What are the responsibilities and job description for the SUBSTITUTE DOG HANDLER position at Franklin High School?
Reporting Relationships: Reports to Building Principal
General Responsibilities: Handles and cares for a student’s service dog during the school day and supports the student by following the behavioral and educational plans of the student. There are three purposes of the service dog for the student: seizure alert and response, deep pressure, and behavior interruption. Training will be provided for this position.
Requirements:
-Working with students and knowledge of IEPs
-Experience working with and around dogs
-Must obtain dog handler certification, training will be provided
-Proven record of reliability
-Good communication skills
-Patience
-Ability to maintain confidentiality
Performance Responsibilities:
-Instruct and receive signals from student’s service dog as it relates to student’s disability
-Maintain control and physical responsibility of service dog during the school day
-Implements the tool of the service dog for seizure alert and response, deep pressure, and behavior interruption
-Provides necessary care for the student’s service dog during the school day, including but not limited to toileting, feeding, and watering
-Maintains the service dog on a leash when in school or public setting
-Takes service dog to identified area for toileting as needed
-Cleans up any mess the service dog makes and disposes of waste properly
-Advises building principal of any property that may be accidentally damaged by the service dog
-Insures service dog wears identifying equipment
-Ensures service dog has adequate food and water breaks as required
-Maintains appropriate proximity to student owner at all times
-Liaisons with student owner’s parent or designee on issues related to the care of the service dog and transfer of custody at the beginning and end of the school day
-Ensures the safety of the student owner’s service dog and the school community while in school, on school grounds, and on school related transportation
-Keeps service dog from initiating contact with others without direct permission, or bark, whine, growl, or make any disruptive noises
-Respects the rights of others, i.e., allergies, fear, etc.
-Provides positive behavior supports and academic interventions for student
-Works with lead teacher to provide academic, social, and emotional support and intervention
-Ensures safety of student during in and out of the classroom
-Collects data
-Provides observation, monitoring and support with Activities of Daily Living, i.e. toilet hygiene, dressing, eating, personal hygiene, etc
-Respects rules of classroom teacher
-Implements all training procedures and protocols
-Adheres to all relevant school district policies and safety procedures
-Maintains confidentiality of all Franklin Public School students’ educational process and records, including that of the service dog’s student owner
-Communicates any issues to the building principal
-Perform other related duties as assigned by the building principal
