Job Description / Essential Elements :

FRANKLIN-MCKINLEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT

CLASS TITLE : PARA-EDUCATOR-SPECIAL EDUCATION

INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT-SPECIAL EDUCATION)

BASIC FUNCTION :

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individual or small groups of students in an assigned special education program; monitor and report student progress regarding behavior and performance; perform a variety of clerical and support duties related to classroom activities.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES :

Assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to students in an assigned special education program such as Special Day Class (SDC), Resource Specialist Program (RSP), severely handicapped or other special education assignment. E

Prepare instructional materials as directed by the teacher; administer, monitor and score a variety of tests; rephrase materials and explain instructions and words. E

Observe and control behavior of students according to approved procedures; report progress regarding student performance and behavior. E

Perform a variety of clerical duties such as preparing, typing and duplicating instructional materials, scoring papers and recording grades; prepare and maintain student records and files as assigned. E

Confer with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet the individual needs of special education students. E

Direct group activities of students as assigned; assist in monitoring lunchroom and playground activities as assigned; accompany students on field trips as assigned. E

Provide support to the teacher by setting up work areas, displays and exhibits, operating audio-visual equipment, operating educational training equipment and distributing and collecting paper, supplies and materials; assist with the preparation of student portfolios. E

Operate a computer and other office equipment as assigned; operate assistive devices as assigned. E

Accompany students to computer labs, library, or bus stops as assigned.

Assist students with various self-help skills as assigned by the position.

Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures.

Maintain the confidentiality of student records and information according to established guidelines.

Participate in staff meetings and in-service training programs as assigned.

Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES :

Knowledge of :

Child guidance principles and practices, especially as they relate to special education students.

Problems and concerns of students with special needs.

Basic subjects taught in District schools, including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language and reading.

Safe practices in classroom and playground activities.

Basic instructional methods and techniques.

Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.

Oral and written communication skills.

Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

Basic record-keeping techniques.

Classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct.

Operation of office machines and computer equipment.

Ability to :

Assist with instruction and related activities in an assigned special education program.

Perform clerical duties such as filing, duplicating and maintaining records.

Print and write legibly.

Add, subtract, multiply and divide quickly and accurately.

Understand and follow oral and written directions.

Learn the procedures, functions and limitations of assigned duties.

Communicate effectively with children and adults.

Read, interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

Work confidentially with discretion.

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Supervise and discipline students according to approved policies and procedures.

Operate instructional and office equipment.

Maintain regular attendance.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :

Any combination equivalent to : graduation from high school and one year experience in working with children in an organized setting.

Physical demands :

Hearing and speaking to exchange information.

Dexterity of hands and fingers to demonstrate activities and operate a computer keyboard.

Seeing to read a variety of materials and monitor students.

Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students.

Sitting or standing for extended periods of time.

Requirements / Qualifications

Passing exams are required for this position and are administered in English. The components are : English; Mathematics; and Ability to Assist. If you hold a College Degree or 48 college semester units (with courses in English and Mathematics) and attach transcripts to your application we may be able to waive those exams, after review. If unofficial transcripts are attached they must have your name and the College name printed on them. A completed application and photo ID are required to take any exam. EMPLOYMENT OFFER IS CONTINGENT UPON DETERMINATION OF FITNESS FOR THE POSITION-BASIC MEDICAL EXAMINATION (POPP).
